This delicate drawing is made with silverpoint on prepared archival board. The exploration of ephemerality, and the fragility of nature, its textures and movement, is the focus of this work by Margot Glass. The exquisite beauty of a group of simple feathers, often overlooked or considered mundane, is discovered and elevated through close examination and exquisite drawing by the artist. Signed and titled on verso and initialed on recto, lower right corner. Framed in a silver frame, 10 x 8 inches (unframed), 12 x 10 inches (framed). Glass draws with pure silver not only for the delicacy of line the metal point provides, but also for the allure of using a semiprecious metal as a drawing material. Working on an archival board allows the gleam and luster and delicate reflective silver properties of the metallic medium to present as soft and textured against the ground. The surface is primed with traditional silverpoint ground. The silverpoint ground is slightly chalky when dry to provide a subtle toothy surface to grab the silver particles. Glass is interested in the tradition of using nature as idealized ornament in art and design while seeking to carefully observe as accurately as possible in all the irregularity and imperfection. The metallic lines enhance the decorative qualities of the filigree patterns formed by the minute details in each object. Her workes is based on flora, fauna, DNA and all sorts of exotica. His education as an artist began in 1963 at Fullerton Community College where his interest in architectural drafting led him to develop a passion for drawing, painting, and printmaking. In 1966, he pursued his love for printmaking further at California State University, Long Beach under the former Tamarind Lithography Workshop printer, Robert Evermon. In 1969, Petersen went on to work as an assistant printer at Gemini G.E.L. where he printed editions for Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg. Most notably, Petersen served as one of the head printers for Rauschenberg's Stoned Moon series, during which the two formed a close friendship. In late 1970, Rauschenberg invited Petersen to live and work with him on Captiva Island, Florida, which had recently become the artist's permanent residence and studio. In 1971, Rauschenberg and Petersen established the experimental print shop, Untitled Press, Inc., where they not only printed their own work but also for visiting artists including David Bradshaw, Brice Marden, Hisachika Takahashi, Cy Twombly, and Robert Whitman. Petersen lived and worked closely with Rauschenberg on Captiva Island until 1980. During the early 1970's Petersen predominately created monochromatic minimalist work and then began to explore the possibilities presented by his intricate sketch pages. In 1976, Petersen made his first monthly inspired journal drawing from the highlights of his sketchbook where he collected observations of daily surroundings, drawings for future work, musings, postcards, photographs, and ephemera such as calendar clippings and magazine illustrations. This technique continues to serve as the basis for his present work. Unique signed and dedicated mixed media collage with silver and colored foil on board by the important Color Field painter Kenneth Noland. It's quite a dazzling work, combining color field, geometric abstraction with Op Art, as the work changes appearance and color with the reflected and refracted light. - sometimes appearing light; sometimes darker. See the photos -- there's a light one and a darker one - and they both depict the same work. What's so impressive is that this work literally changes color depending on how the light reflects against it. The artist wrote a personal and heartfelt inscription on the verso to "Twig and Laila". (Twig (sic), which the artist deliberately misspells, is Thurston Twigg Smith, former publisher of The Honolulu Advertiser, who was married to New York philanthropist Laila Twigg Smith. Laila had lived in Hawaii since 1970, where she and her husband had put together a substantial collection of contemporary art. Unfortunately, the two divorced in 1996 and soon after she returned to New York. Two years later, in 1998, Laila died of liver failure at the young age of only 53. Laila was a major philanthropist and art collector who moved from Manhattan to Hawaii.
