Tom Judd
Casey the Cat, unique acrylic mixed media and metal animal (cat) painting SIGNED

2000

About the Item

Tom Judd Casey (for the "Patrick Eddington Cat Project), 2000 Acrylic, Mixed Media and Metal painting on board Signed and dated in pencil on the front 12 × 10 1/2 inches This is a unique painting Tom Judd Biography This is a lovely mixed media painting by popular Philadelphia based artist, Tom Judd. Provenance: Estate of Patrick Eddington. Patrick Eddington was a Utah school teacher who had the improbable idea of writing to his favorite artists and asking them to draw or paint pictures of cats. “This project is a labor of love," Eddington wrote of his endeavor in a 2004 letter. “It will culminate as a large book and traveling exhibition. It will also help Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I’ve asked individuals I admire to create cat-related works. They are not the typical cat images but creative works.” Patrick Eddington passed away in early 2016 and his vision was, unfortunately, never realized. Nonetheless, artists like Keith Haring, Joel Peter Witkin, William T. Wiley Roy de Forest, Kiki Smith, Marcel Dzama - and Tom Judd, who created the present work, "Casey" were amused and inspired by the project - and agreed to participate. Very good original studio condition Tom Judd grew up in Salt Lake City and attended the University of Utah from 1970 to 1972. He attended the Philadelphia College of Art where he studied with Rafael Ferrer, Bob Kulicke, and Larry Day. Judd first exhibited his art work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1979, where at 25 he was included in a survey show entitled Contemporary Drawing: Philadelphia curated by Ann Percy and Frank Goodyear. The museum purchased a work from that exhibit for their permanent collection. Judd has gone onto exhibit his work in distinguished commercial galleries and Museums across the country. He is in major collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of Art and the Birmingham Museum of Art. Judd works in a variety of medium including painting, collage, photography and installation work. This includes major public art projects such as the Independence Hall subway station in Philadelphia.

Cutrone's paintings are colorful, lively, and less challenging than those of his contemporaries. As Andy Warhol's assistant at the Factory atop the Decker Building from 1972 until 1980, Cutrone worked with Warhol on paintings, prints, films, and other concepts, eventually co-opting Warhol's earliest work (pre-1960) as well as works by Roy Lichtenstein and others, until finally distilling those myriad influences into the style a few critics eventually labeled "Post-Pop." He exhibited at the Niveau Gallery in 1979 with a Scottish artist called Mike Gall who showed paintings of Snoopy, Mickey and Minnie mouse, the Pink Panther and also a small series of Peter Rabbit paintings...

Above all, a feeling of freedom is carried throughout. The artist studied painting in Aberdeen in the northeast of Scotland at the Gray's School of Art, where she received an Honors B.A. in Fine Art. She was awarded the Royal Scottish Academy John Kinross Scholarship to study abroad in Florence. In 2001, McArthur completed her M.A. in European Fine Art...
