Henry Cheadle British, (1852-1931) Cattle Resting Oil on canvas, signed & dated (18)84 Image size: 19.25 inches x 29.25 inches Size including frame: 26.75 inches x 36.75 inches A well-executed landscape painting of cattle at a river by Henry Cheadle. A small herd of cattle are shown resting in a meadow by the side of a river. On the other side of the bank in the distance can be seen sloping hills reminiscent of the river Avon. At the time of this painting, the artist was living at Steelhouse Lane in Birmingham. Henry Cheadle was a landscape painter born in Birmingham on 16 May 1852 to Henry Cheadle and his wife Matilda (née Wood). His father was a hairdresser and they lived at 2a Steelhouse Lane in Birmingham. Although little can be found about his early education, he is known to have attended the Birmingham School of Art, where he won a number of prizes. He went on to study at the South Kensington Art School (later the Royal College of Art), where he also won awards including silver and bronze medals. Cheadle began exhibiting at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1871, where he went on to become a member. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1875, the Royal Cambrian Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Bristol Fine Art Academy as well as at Frost & Reed. He played an active part in the local art societies, becoming curator and later president of the Midlands Art Club. He also became a member of the Birmingham Art Circle where he exhibited up until his death. By the late 1880’s, he had moved with his parents to 40 Spring Road in Edgbaston. He spent his time travelling around painting the landscapes of Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, the Midlands and North Wales. He also visited Newlyn in Cornwall where he painted a number of coastal views. He remained unmarried and lived with his parents until their deaths at the beginning of the 20th century. He continued living in Birmingham and exhibiting until his death aged 78 on 10 January, 1931. He was buried at Key Hill Cemetery in Birmingham. Some of his paintings were gifted to the Birmingham Museum shortly after his death and hung in the Victorian Room. Two of his works can still be found at the Museum today. Frame size 30.7 inches x 35.8 inches ( 78cm x 91cm ). Available for sale; this original oil painting is by the Nottingham artist Harry Freckleton and dates from the 1960s. The painting is presented and supplied in its’ original wooden frame (which is shown in these photographs). The frame, canvas and the painted surface have benefitted from cleaning, restoration and conservation, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. The original cotton covered slip has been replaced. This vintage painting is now in very good condition, defying its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right. The acclaimed artist Harry Freckleton was born in Nottingham in 1890 and lived there for most of his life. He studied at the Nottingham School of Arts, as it was then known, from 1904 to 1912 under Wilson Foster and was much influenced by the local painter Arthur Spooner. He worked as a lithograph artist, and then served in the army during World War 1. He then worked as an artist for New Zealand Cine Studios and went on to run his own photographic business from 1924-65. Freckleton married the artist Vera Freckleton and they spent most of their married life living in at Whitegates in The Park, Nottingham. Most of Freckleton’s art is painted in oils, and he specialised in still life, landscape and figurative work, especially childhood scenes. His best works have a strong human interest, with an individual technique showing quality and fine execution. He was a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists, exhibiting there and becoming an esteemed Associate. As a successful artist Freckleton exhibited work seven times at the Royal Academy, as well as the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists. Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Vaclav Vytlacil (1892-1984) He was born to Czechoslovakian parents in 1892 in New York City. Living in Chicago as a youth, he took classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, returning to New York when he was 20. From 1913 to 1916, he enjoyed a scholarship from the Art Students League, and worked with John C. Johansen (a portraitist whose expressive style resembled that of John Singer Sargent), and Anders Zorn. He accepted a teaching position at the Minneapolis School of Art in 1916, remaining there until 1921. This enabled him to travel to Europe to study Cézanne’s paintings and works of the Old Masters. He traveled to Paris, Prague, Dresden, Berlin, and Munich seeking the works of Titian, Cranach, Rembrandt, Veronese, and Holbein, which gave him new perspective. Vytlacil studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich, settling there in 1921. Fellow students were Ernest Thurn and Worth Ryder, who introduced him to famous abstractionist Hans Hofmann. He worked with Hofmann from about 1922 to 1926, as a student and teaching assistant. During the summer of 1928, after returning to the United States, Vytlacil gave lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, on modern European art. Soon thereafter, he became a member of the Art Students League faculty. After one year, he returned to Europe and successfully persuaded Hofmann to teach at the League as well. He spent about six years in Europe, studying the works of Matisse, Picasso, and Dufy. In 1935, he returned to New York and became a co-founder of the American Abstract Artists group in 1936. He later had teaching posts at Queens College in New York; the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California; Black Mountain College in North Carolina; and the Art Students League. His paintings exhibit a clear inclination toward modernism. His still lives and interiors from the 1920s indicate an understanding of the art of Cézanne. In the 1930s, his works displayed two very different kinds of art at the same time. His cityscapes and landscapes combine Cubist-inspired spatial concerns with an expressionistic approach to line and color. Vytlacil also used old wood, metal, cork, and string in constructions, influenced by his friend and former student, Rupert Turnbull. He eventually ceased creating constructions as he considered them too limiting. The spatial challenges of painting were still his preference. During the 1940s and 1950s, his works indicated a sense of spontaneity not felt in his earlier work. He married Elizabeth Foster in Florence, Italy, in 1927 and they lived and worked in Positano, Italy for extended periods of time. Outside Size: 30 1/2" x 36 5/8" A recent discovery of a painting that appears to be Farrar’s family dog. This was done when he was just fifteen years old. As a teenager in the 1940s, Farrar received much local acclaim in the Washington D.C. art Scene. Words like “Child Prodigy”, “Brilliant” and “Gifted” were used to describe him in the local newspaper. He had a great bout of early success which included developing patrons among Washington DC’s art elite but this was short lived as he was afflicted with schizophrenia and alcoholism as an adult causing him to spend much of his life in mental institutions. In 1942, Farrar won the Washington Times-Herald's outdoor art fair. This painting was executed the following year when he was 15 (1943). That same year he won the top prize at Atlanta University’s third annual “ Exhibition of Paintings, Sculpture and Prints by Negro Artists ” with a piece titled “ Queenie ”. Approximately one hundred and fifty works of art were included in the show, representing the best works of more than seventy-five contemporary African American artists. This show included works by Romare Bearden, who was awarded Honorable Mention for his painting “ The Two Genrerations ”. Also included among the exhibitors - Charles H.
