Collies in a landscape
Located in Stoke, Hampshire
John Emms (1841-1912) Collies in a landscape Oil on canvas signed and dated 'JNO EMMS/ 86.' (lower left) Canvas Size - 30 x 25 in Framed Size - 36 x 31 in Provenance Anonymous sale; Sotheby's, New York, 9 June 1995, lot 186. with Malcolm Innes Gallery, London; The Collection of Charlie Watts. Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. John Emms was a British artist best known for his dynamic and characterful paintings of dogs, especially working breeds like foxhounds, terriers, and collies. Born in Blofield, Norfolk, in 1843, Emms developed a deep connection to the countryside and rural life, which became the heart of his artistic inspiration. While he painted horses and hunting scenes, it was his dog portraits that brought him enduring recognition. Emms had a remarkable ability to capture the individuality and spirit of each animal, portraying them not just as pets or working animals, but as noble and expressive beings. His brushwork was confident and lively, and he often painted dogs with a sense of pride, intelligence, and dignity. Among the many breeds he painted, collies held a special place. Emms portrayed them with great sensitivity, often emphasizing their alert expressions, soft coats, and loyal nature. His collie paintings...

A Dazzle of Zebras
Located in Palm Desert, CA
Zebras are one of the most interesting and amusing of African animals. They share the genus Equus with horses and donkeys. In a group it is believed their dizzying stripes confuse prey - or perhaps make them dizzy. An artist's delight, zebras' black and white stripes call out to be painted. Taking it a step further, Carole Garland attempts to confuse the viewer with a "Now you see it, now you don't" look at the zebras standing in a streambed in South Africa. Painted in oil on a 30"x40" wood panel, the wood sides serve as a frame around the painting. Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois and studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has worked privately with Keith Finch and Rick Pekar, taken workshops with numerous plein air painters and was mentored by David Gallup...

Pardner, 1943 Vintage African American Art, Black Artist, Painting, Pet Portrait
Located in Grand Rapids, MI
John Farrar (American, 1928-1972) Signed: John Farrar (Lower, Left) “ Pardner ”, 1943 Titled Above Signature (Lower, Left) Oil on Canvas 26 ⅛” x 32 ⅛” Housed in a 2 ½” period ornamented Newcomb-Macklin frame in toned gold leaf, in good original condition. Outside Size: 30 1/2" x 36 5/8" A recent discovery of a painting that appears to be Farrar’s family dog. This was done when he was just fifteen years old. As a teenager in the 1940s, Farrar received much local acclaim in the Washington D.C. art Scene. Words like “Child Prodigy”, “Brilliant” and “Gifted” were used to describe him in the local newspaper. He had a great bout of early success which included developing patrons among Washington DC’s art elite but this was short lived as he was afflicted with schizophrenia and alcoholism as an adult causing him to spend much of his life in mental institutions. In 1942, Farrar won the Washington Times-Herald's outdoor art fair. This painting was executed the following year when he was 15 (1943). That same year he won the top prize at Atlanta University’s third annual “ Exhibition of Paintings, Sculpture and Prints by Negro Artists ” with a piece titled “ Queenie ”. Approximately one hundred and fifty works of art were included in the show, representing the best works of more than seventy-five contemporary African American artists. This show included works by Romare Bearden, who was awarded Honorable Mention for his painting “ The Two Genrerations ”. Also included among the exhibitors - Charles H. Alston, Allen Rohen Crite, Aaron Douglas, Fredrick Flemister, Sargant Johnson, Horace Pippin, Jacob Lawrence, Marjorie Wheeler Brown, Hughie Lee Smith, Lois Mailou Jones...
