About the Item

George Cole British, (1810-1883) Waiting for a Treat Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1857 Image size: 19.5 inches x 29.5 inches Size including frame: 26.25 inches x 36.25 inches A charming landscape painting of two farmers with plough horses and a dog by George Cole. The men are shown resting on a log in front of three horses. A terrier dog can be seen waiting expectantly by one of the men as he eats his lunch. George Cole was born in London in 1810. Little is known about his education but he is believed to have started as an apprentice to a ship's painter in the Royal Navy dockyards at Portsmouth. He was a self-taught artist who initially began painting portraits and animals and for a time worked for Wombwell's menagerie painting posters. He married Eliza Vicat at Portsea, Hampshire on 6 May 1832 and together the couple had five children. His sons George Vicat Cole (1833-1893) and Alfred Benjamin Cole (1840-1893) also became artists. The family lived in the Portsmouth area residing at Buckland Road, Portsea. Cole soon began specialising in landscape paintings and made his debut at the Society of British Artists in 1838, continuing to exhibit there until his death. By 1849, he was exhibiting at the Royal Academy where he also became a frequent contributor. He achieved considerable success and was able to afford servants and subsequently move his family to 2 Lewis Place in Fulham, London around 1853. Cole was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1850, became auditor in 1856, and vice-president in 1867. Cole produced many scenes of Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Devon and during the early 1850’s he travelled around the country with his son George Vicat Cole to sketch and paint the river valleys of the Wye, Teign, and Dart. They also went abroad to Europe where they stayed in the Moselle area. By 1871, he had moved to 1 Kensington Crescent, Kensington where he lived for the remainder of his life. He died in Kensington on 7 September 1883 and was buried in Kensal Green cemetery. Examples of his paintings are held in many public collections including Blackburn Museum, Brighton & Hove Museum, Bristol Museum, Hastings Museum, Kirklees Museum, Leicester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, National Trust, Portsmouth Museum, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery, Wednesbury Museum and Worthing Museum. 19th Century Scottish landscape oil painting of Highland cattle at Glen Goil
By William Watson
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
William Watson Jnr British, (1847-1921) Up Glen Goil, West Highlands Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1892, further inscribed verso Image size: 23.5 inches x 35.5 inches Size including frame: 36.25 inches x 48.25 inches This highly atmospheric and well executed painting by William Watson Jnr depicts Highland Cattle watering at Glen Goil. Glen Goil is a valley area of Argyll and Bute in the West Highlands. It is situated at the junction of Hell’s Glen and Gleann Mor and has the river Goil flowing through. Located around 2 miles from Lochgoilhead, it is well known as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Watson made several trips to the Highlands and produced a number of paintings of the locality, many of which included highland cattle such as this fine example. Another painting by him of Glen Goil is held by the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s. As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists. Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. Four of their children Sidney Watson (1881-1931), Caroline Ellen Watson (1871-1947), William Robert Charles Watson (1873-1928) and Walter James Watson...
