About the Item
Scottish artist, David McEwen's oil painting of a Border Terrier dog and horse, "The Runaways" is a masterfully painted narration of Phillip, a dog, and Bruno, a horse, being enticed by a fairy horse, Pooka, into the Hills. (full story by David McEwen below). David McEwen has been a professional painter and internationally respected teacher for more years than he cares to remember. His formal training began when, at the age of 13, he was accepted into a special group formed at The University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. David McEwen is a raconteur who not only is an amazingly talented "painter of the world" but a charming story teller.
"One afternoon last March I was getting ready for a hack out towards the Sugar Loaf Mountains in County Wicklow, Ireland, when fingers of mist began to make their way across the yard. I shivered and realising that I needed a heavier coat I turned towards the Tack Room to fetch one. Once I returned to the yard I was annoyed to see that Bruno and my dog Phillip had become bored and had moved off, they have very active minds of their own, which is one way of saying I haven’t been able train either of them. They are not Trigger and Rebel you understand! So I followed them shouting like a demented loon into the thickening fog. Suddenly I passed through a broken gate, a sudden wind parted the rags of mist and there were my runaways … but they were not alone, a bright bay was leading them across the field. I collected Bruno’s reins and spoke sharply to him and Phillip, at that the fog thickened to white-out, we were utterly incurtains of cold and unpleasant nightmare. Both Bruno and Phillip shivered and looked at me as, suddenly, the fog cleared in an in. Of the other horse, the broken gate and fence there was no sign and we found ourselves in a field close to the yard and, for some reason neither I, Bruno or Phillip wanted to move from the yard again that day.
I told a neighbour of my adventure, he looked at me quizzically over his pipe and said, 'You saw the Pooka, you were lucky not to mount and follow or we’d never see you again.' 'The Pooka ? What’s a Pooka ?', I asked. Tim Pat shook his head and replied, “The Pooka is a fairy horse which leads the unsuspecting into the Hills where they stay forever and a day.”
I’m afraid that I didn’t believe my old friend ….. but ….. I never saw the Light Bay or that field again."
