DETAIL: A most interesting unuusal and characterful mid Century portrait of a man mowing the lawn. The painting initialled lower right for Kenwrothy. John Dalzell Kenworthy ARCA (5 Nov 1858 - 4 Mar 1954) was an internationally acclaimed artist, sculptor and writer who was born at Whitehaven into a prominent West Cumbrian family. JD Kenworthy was a noted Cumberland artist, who lived at Seacroft House, St Bees, a coastal village south of Whitehaven. He painted both portraits and landscapes, in oil and watercolour in the 50 years centred on the turn of the twentieth century. He was an associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy (1914) and he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, as well as at galleries across Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. He travelled to paint in Scotland and France, where he became particularly well known. He also was a keen angler, and wrote a book in 1933 called 'Fisherman's Philosophy', in which he discusses Scottish salmon and loch trout, and fishing on the French Mediterranean coast. Kenworthy's works are held in the public collections of the Beacon Museum and Helena Thompson Museum. JD Kenworthy's portraits include two of 1st World War veterans, AJ Wandless a Master Mariner and Whitehaven war hero Abraham Acton. Biography: Richir Herman Jean Joseph was born in Ixelles (Brussels), on November 4, 1866. He was a Belgian painter of portraits, still lifes, genre paintings, nudes and landscapes. He made decorative paintings to fit into private homes.
Richir mainly painted portraits. His clients usually belonged to the higher circles. He portrayed amongst others King Albert and Queen Elisabeth, Cardinal Mercier and Countess d’Oultremont. Less known are the landscape paintings he made Limburg and Kempen, where he regularly stayed with befriended artist Emile Van Doren (1865 – 1949).
Herman Richir first studied at the Sint-Joost-ten-Node Academy with Gustave Biot and Charles Hermans, continued his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (1884-1889) with the master teacher and artist Jean-Francois Portaels (1818 – 1895). In 1886, during his studies, he won second Prize of Rome for Painting.
Richir lived in Schaarbeek. In 1900 he became a teacher of drawing and in 1905 first teacher of painting after nature at the Brussels Academy. He was director there several times 1906-1907, 1910, 1911, 1915-1919, 1925-1927. He was retired in 1927.
His pupils included Albert Alleman (1892 – 1933), Éliane de Meuse (1899 – 1993), Paul Hagemans (1884 – 1959), Maurice Mareels (1893 – 1976), Guy Onkelinx (1879 – 1935), Georges Rogy (1897 – 1981), José Storie (1899 – 1961), Charles Swyncop (1895 – 1970), Maurice Schelck...

Both sitters are portrayed wearing a silk “Japanese” coat. During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki)
Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits. The loving execution of these contented burghers, enjoying the garden vistas of their country house, places him alongside Amsterdam portraitists such as Constantijn Netscher and Michiel van Musscher...

Important portrait of a young woman depicted half-length turned three-quarters, her face looking at the viewer.
Dressed in a brick red velvet dress, an elegant blue scarf envelops her figure.
Hair styled “a la Fontange”, her powdered hair is raised and tied at the back with a red ribbon, several curly locks escape from her bun and fall on her back and shoulders.
The perfectly oval face with regular features dominated by her straight nose is softened by her gray eyes with slightly lowered lids. The red tinged skin tones on the cheeks and cheekbones color the face and make the portrait come alive.
The young woman is portrayed standing near a pot of carnations. Her strongly lighted figure stands out against an architectural background of columns.
The artist's palette is made of contrasts opposing warm to cold hues. The icy electric blue contrasts with the fiery brick red, the hair powdered with white accentuates even more the flush of the cheeks.
The left arm bent at the elbow, extending the open hand with slightly bent fingers in the foreground brings depth to the composition.
Our portrait, an interesting testimony in the corpus of works of the painter, is part of his youthful period, around 1700-1705.
The former belonging of this portrait to the Marquis de Bailleul reinforces the remarkable character of our painting.
The portrait has been examined by Stéphane Perreau, specialist of Jean Ranc and will be included in the catalog raisonné currently being written, under number P. 43. The notice edited by Mr Perreau is below:

Out of Mischief - British Victorian 1891 art interior portrait oil painting

This absolutely charming exhibited British Victorian oil painting is by female artist Maria Louisa Angus. Painted in 1891, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year. The composition is an interior scene with two young girls on a sofa, looking at a picture book and keeping 'out of mischief' as it is entitled. The room holds an exotic mix of oriental objects and a gorgeous umbrella plant in a gleaming terracotta pot. The girls themselves are sat on a beautifully detailed fur throw, looking at a book, with a marine painting on the wall behind them. The brushwork and colouring are superb and the pink of the older girl's dress is picked up throughout the room. A really lovely painting by a very talented Victorian female artist.
Signed and dated M.L. Angus 1891 lower left.
Provenance. Exhibited at the London, Royal Academy, 1891, no. 841 entitled Out of Mischief.
Anonymous, sale, Doyle, New York, May 20, 1998, lot 161, illustrated. Private collection, Newport, Rhode Island.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 27 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a gilt frame, 34 inches by 27 inches framed and in good condition.
Maria Louisa Angus (1863 - 1934) was born in Southwark on 29th July 1863, the daughter of a printer. She studied at the Lambeth School of Art in 1886 and established a studio at 1a Cowley Street in Westminster, later she worked out of Powers Studio in Ruskin House, Rochester Row. She specialised in genre subjects and some landscapes. She exhibited 10 pictures at the Royal Academy between 1888 and 1893 as well as many London Galleries and Societies.
