About the Item

Here we have a large portrait of a woman elegantly dressed before heading to the Opera. She is seen wearing a vivid pink dress with impressive detailing, holding a fan on her hand. Fantastic RARE Painting and fresh from an estate! Has not Gone through Auction Alice Mumford Roberts (1875-1950) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,. where she studied the fine arts under Joseph DeCamp, Carl Newman, and Robert Henri. She went to Europe in 1898 to study with the painter Marie Haughton. Alice Mumford lived in Spain for two years, continuing her painting studies with José Mara López Mezquita, who would also capture their photos together. She then later proceeded to Paris, where she participated in the Salon of 1900 before spending two years in London. He returned to the United States after these formative travels and established himself as a portrait artist. In 1906 and 1910, he was the Mary Smith Prize winner. In 1920, Alice married the famous Ethnographer Steward Culin, curator of the Museum of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, and she lived and worked in Brooklyn until the death of her husband in 1929. She moved to Miami in 1930, where she lived and worked until her death.
