About the Item

For sale we have this large portrait depicting two young girls in white dresses, standing side by side and posing for the painting. Painted by John Peoli and the Girls happen to be John Peolis Grandchildren. Both are wearing a long-sleeved dress with a high neckline and ruffled skirts. They both have dark hair that falls just past their ears, framing their faces which are illuminated by natural light. John Peoli (1825-1893) was an Cuban/American Artist, who resided for most of his life in New York. His works are rare and mainly in Museums. He went on to study art in Cuba, Rome, Madrid and Paris. The New York Times went on to say after his passing that his style is "so essentially Italian that one cannot understand how anybody on this continent north of New-Mexico could produce them".
