This stunning British Victorian Pre-Raphaelite Royal Academy exhibited oil painting is by noted historical female artist and suffragette Jessie MacGregor. She was tutored by Lord Frederick Leighton at the Royal Academy art schools in the 1870's and his influence can be seen here. Painted in 1892 and exhibited that year, the subject matter is when Dante, (1265-1321) later an Italian Florentine poet, first met Beatrice, the love of his life when he was nine. They met in a gathering at her father's palazzo in Florence. She was a few months younger than Dante and dressed in a crimson dress. They never actually spoke for another nine years although Dante often observed her. They were both married off during this time, as was the custom then and Beatrice died aged only 24. Dante remained devoted to Beatrice for the rest of his life and she was his principal inspiration for much of his well known work, such as La Vita Nuova (The New Life) and La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy). (see below biography for more details on Dante and Beatrice). This stunning Pre-Raphaelite oil painting depicts Beatrice kneeling on the grass, holding flowers and gazing up at Dante as he stands beside her, hands over her head, perhaps miming crowning her. Other children and their maids dance around them. Beyond them is a Florentine garden with beautiful arches and some figures to the right. To the left one can glimpse the landscape under a summer's sky. MacGregor has portrayed superb detail in the figures expressions and clothing with rich red and gold tones and the vivid blue sky echoing in the little boy's tunic. The brushwork is fantastic. MacGregor painted some fantastic paintings in her time, many of which were exhibited and now hang in art galleries. This painting is a superb example of her work, with excellent provenance and would grace any wall. Signed twice 'Jessie Macgregor/1892' lower right. Provenance. Housed in a gilt frame with ornate flower corners and reeded edge, 87 inches by 57 inches, in good condition. Jessie MacGregor (1847–1919) was a British painter. She was born in Liverpool to a Scottish father, Alexander (1820-1898) and Liverpudlian mother, Sarah (1820-1894). She had an older brother and 7 younger siblings. MacGregor first learned drawing at the drawing academy in Liverpool run by her grandfather Andrew Hunt, a landscape painter. Her mother taught her to use water colours. Her parents went to live in London and she began to study painting there, becoming a pupil at the Royal Academy Schools in 1870 for seven years where her teachers were Lord Leighton, P. H. Calderon, R.A., and John Pettie, R.A. She won a gold medal at the Royal Academy for history painting in December 1871, the prescribed subject being An Act of Mercy. She was the second woman after Louisa Starr's gold medal in 1867, and the last woman to do so until 1909. She first exhibited at the RA whilst still a student, in 1871. She continued with a historical genre when history paintings were broadening their reach towards literature and romance. Her subjects were almost always women or children. MacGregor was made an Academician for the Liverpool Academy of Art in 1874. By 1880 she was using a studio on Elm Tree Road and exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy. in 1884 her brother Archibald also started working from this address and they both had paintings at the RA that year. In 1888 she moved studio to Hill Road St John's Wood. In 1892 MacGregor had two painting at the RA, a portrait of Miss Phyllis Eden and our painting, In the Childhood of Dante. This was described as a fresh bit of Italian Childhood and harmonious colour grouping by the Western Daily Press. Portraits rarely got a mention in the papers but narrative works were much more popular. She lectured widely for the Victorian University extension scheme at the Arts Clubs of Liverpool, the National Gallery and Leighton House museum and other regional centres. Mary Magdalene in the Desert Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, Il Guercino (Cento, 1591 - Bologna, 1666) Workshop of Oil on canvas 122 x 78 cm In frame 136 x 92 cm The painting presents us with a superb image of the penitent Magdalene, portrayed as an attractive young woman, mischievously undressed to remind us of her sinful past, her gaze full of devotion turned towards the angel messenger arriving from above. The composition is made even more fascinating by her long, loose hair that falls softly over her body, revealing her breasts, a further reference to the strong femininity of this saint, who is both a sinner and a penitent, and therefore perpetually portrayed in the ambivalence between the sacred and the profane. Stylistically, the work, which can be dated to the first half of the 17th century, clearly belongs to the Emilian school, and the Guercinesque characteristics undoubtedly suggest that it was executed by an artist from his workshop. The iconography of the painting reinterprets a work by Guercino, “The Vision of Saint Jerome”, painted in 1641 for the Confraternity of Saint Jerome in Rimini: the two works are similar in their setting, the composition of the scene, the treatment of the bodies of the protagonists and even in the pose and colours and the inclusion of the angel in the upper part of the painting. Returning to our beautiful Magdalene, although Guercino's original work cannot be traced, there are other versions by his talented pupils and workshop, including that by Cesare Gennari (Cento, 1637 - Bologna, 1688), now in the Pinacoteca Civica in Cento (FE), considered one of the best talents to emerge from the prestigious teaching of the master. Gennari Cesare - Penitent Magdalene oil on canvas, 276x 171 cm, 1662, no. 0342 Civica Pinacoteca Il Guercino, Cento (FE). Although it is difficult to attribute our high-quality canvas to a specific artist, we can trace its authorship to the workshop of the great master, hypothesising that it was painted either by Cesare Gennari himself or by an artist close to his style, such as Giuseppe Maria Ficatelli, from whom the particular sense of light and vigorous naturalism derives. Our painter follows the robust and synthetic naturalism typical of Cesare's style: the touch is refined but full of character in the depiction of Mary Magdalene, with her sensual flesh, particularly her breasts, which are barely concealed by her long, curly, golden hair. The woman embodies a three-dimensional strength that makes her the focal point of the painting, around which everything else is coordinated, thanks in part to her diagonal pose, which emphasises her depth. She kneels on a rock altar, on which there is a crucifix and an open book, as well as a skull at her feet, as a warning against Vanitas. In this dark setting, with colours that are deep and functional to the message of faith that Mary Magdalene conveys, the only source of light illuminating the scene is the angel at the top of the painting, pointing to the true source of that glow, which stands out against the magnificent lapis lazuli blue of the sky. This fine late 19th-century portrait by renowned Italian artist Jean Baptiste Discart (1856-1944) depicts a lady wearing a black dress embellished with a lace collar, together with a single yellow rose. It’s catalogued (#3) in Theo P.G. Kralt’s book, Jean Baptiste Discart, Orientalist Paintings and Dutch Portraits. A provocative rose draws one’s eye to the ‘décolletage’. Was it her idea or the bold suggestion of a young Discart, just 21, and bursting with energy? The style of dress came to the fore during the late 19th century and was regarded as somewhat improper by a stoic older generation. But, of course, the glaring eyes only encouraged young ladies to rebel and adopt the fashion regardless. Little is known about the sitter, but it’s conceivable that she’s either Austrian or French, given Discart’s known locations in 1879. It was completed during his training. It bears all the hallmarks of a young and confident painter looking to establish himself. Born in Modena, Italy, Discart’s father, Francesco Ferdinando, moved in particularly distinguished circles and worked for the Duke of Modena. Indeed, the Duke became young Jean’s godfather, so the pair were well-connected. One can only imagine the ostentatious interiors that he witnessed during childhood, and it’s conceivable that these experiences inspired his appreciation for the finer things in life. At 14, he was enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he trained under the German painter, Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880). It seems that he stayed here until Feuerbach’s retirement in 1877 when the course was handed over to Leopold Carl Müller (1834-1892). His short time under Müller, known for his exquisite ‘orientalist’ work, would be transformative. From here, he left Vienna to immerse himself in the cosmopolitan environs of the French Capital and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884.
