Created during his residency in Litzlberg on Attersee, where Klimt and the Floge family summered from 1900-1907, Klimt explores nature’s transcendental qualities. His single sunflower is human-like, it’s golden halo is like a ring of sun-kissed hair surrounding a bald pate. It’s known that at the same time Klimt was creating this image, he was also at work on a photo essay about the Floge sisters’ clothing from their fashion salon. Their fashion house was best known for its “reform dresses” which featured loose-fitting long robes which billowed at the arms and torso. Viewed with this in mind, it is not a hard leap to imagine the lone sunflower as a self-portrait from reverse. Klimt’s balding head crowned in a golden corona forms the apex of a pyramidal flowing gown of foliage and flowers. Ethel Mars was born in Springfield, IL. She attended Cincinnati Art Academy meeting fellow artists/printmakers Edna B. Hopkins and Maud Hunt Squire (who later became her lifelong companion).
In 1905 Mars and Squire moved to Paris and quickly became active members in the vibrant Parisian art community. They were known to visit Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas, and it is said that Ethel Mars and Maud Hunt Squire inspired Stein’s prose Miss Furr and Miss Skeene. At the outset of WWI Mars and Squire left Paris and settled in Provincetown, MA., a magnet for creative minds. Other artists arrived in Provincetown, among them were Blanche Lazzell, B. J. O. German-born Joseph Vorst came from Essen (born June 19, 1897). His teacher was the leading German impressionist Max Liebermann (1847-1935), who was the champion of French impressionism in Berlin. He had traveled to Barbizon and Paris to see paintings by Manet first hand, including In the Conservatory, which made its way to Berlin. Later Vorst's home town of Essen would acquire a collection of modern art in 1921, which became the Museum Folkwang, one of the earliest of its kind.
Most likely to escape the Nazis, Vorst made his way to Missouri; we know that he was a member of the American Artists Congress and he signed the famous "Call" in 1936 at the group's first congress, the left-wing organization that stood up to combat fascism. Surely he would have known Joe Jones...

In very good condition, with margins (deckle edges bottom and right irregularly trimmed, the slightest toning), 12 x 8 7/8 inches, the sheet 15 3/4 x 11 inches.
Provenance: Kennedy Galleries, New York (with their stock number a11101).
A fine rich impression, printed with a brownish/black ink, with substantial burr and carefully wiped plate tone lightening the center of the composition, printed on a cream wove paper. A trial proof aside from the 48 impressions in this state.
As described by Dodgson, the ground at the bottom right is blank to a height of 10 mm in this state, but the foreground of the composition is in fact darkened with plate tone.
