The facts regarding the life of Walworth Stilson are limited to a history of the Stilson family, census reports of New Milford, Connecticut, and a few details from a letter regarding prints by Stilson donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Stilson’s father, William Bostwick Stilson, was born in New Milford, Connecticut on September 30, 1842, and worked as a civil engineer. His mother, Ida Cynthia Alford, was born in Oswego, New York on June 25, 1851. The two were married August 4, 1869. The couple resided in New Milford, where a son, Jay Alvord, was born April 24, 1870, a daughter Mabel Louise was born March 11, 1872, and William Walworth was born July 29, 1874. Alington in Wiltshire (The First Swallow). 1927. Etching. Garton 2.iv. 6 3/4 x 8 7/8 (sheet 10 1/2 x 13 1/2). Final state published by in an editon of 12 by Garton & Cooke in 1982 (Nicolson published an edition of 40 in 1927). In states iii and iv, the swallow of the title was removed. In state iv, the sky was re-etched and the cross-hatching was slightly finer. Signed in pencil.
Garton writes, page 11: "The design was based on the Anglican chapel-of-ease is the farmyard of Bulisge at Allinston near Chippenham....The print was originally entitled The First Swallow, but the swallow was burnished out before the 1927 edition....Fifty years later new work was effected in the worn-out areas of the sky and distance to produce prints which, in his opinion, were better than those of the original edition."

James Alphege Brewer was well known in the early 20th century as a producer of color etchings of European cathedrals and other scenes of church, college, and community. He was born July 24, 1881, in the Kensington section of London, England, the son of Henry W. Brewer, noted artist of historical architecture and prominent convert to the Catholic Church, and the grandson of John Sherren Brewer, Jr., “the brilliant editor of the Calendar of Letters of Henry VIII.” His great uncle was E. Cobham Brewer, the polymath who compiled Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. Among his older siblings were the artist Henry C. Brewer and the organist and writer John Francis Brewer.
Brewer attended the Westminster School of Art in London, where his brother Henry also trained. In 1910, he married Florence Emma Lucas, an accomplished painter in oil and watercolor, whose father was the noted landscape artist George Lucas and whose great uncle was David Lucas, the famous engraver for John Constable. Florence's brothers Edwin and George assisted Brewer in the printing of Brewer's etchings.
Brewer exhibited at the Royal Academy (RA) and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), at the Paris Salon of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and in the shows of the Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA). He became an associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1929 and a full member in the last two years of his life. He was also a member of the Hampstead Society of Artists, the Society of Graphic Art, and the Ealing Arts Club, where he was first Honorary Art Secretary and then Honorary Art Chairman. Wonderful original etching with aquatint realized by Georges Rouault between 1917 and 1923, published as a suite in 1948. Sheet in perfect conditions.
The artwork is part of the important suite Miserere, considered as the most important religious graphic of XX century. Sunt lacrimae Rerum represents an episode of Christ's passion with a kneeling figure looking upwards. Miserere suite is divided in two themes: religious and profane; one is linked to Christ's passion and the other is dedicated to the human event, to the pilgrimage of pain on earth, made even more tragic by war. In the 58 original plates, Rouault lingers on the conditions of humanity. Like few other contemporaries, Rouault represents human figures placing him at the center of an absurd and squalid theater. Interesting the use of contrasts and the shapes of the figures with black outlines.
