These excellent gilt ground vases are high quality antique pieces, dating from the Empire period in France at the start of the 19th century. Each vase is set on a square base, is mounted with twin scrolling handles inset with neoclassical masks, and has a flared gilt ground neck. Both vases are also decorated to the front with depictions of winged putti on gilt ground; one vase shows the putti playing musical instruments, while the other shows them holding writing tablets and laurel wreaths. Orientalist style works became very popular in the 19th Century, and the tradition continued into the early 20th Century, when this fine porcelain plaque was produced. Manufactured by famed German firm KPM, the plaque was retailed in New York by Gilman Collamore & Co., who imported high-end works of porcelain and glass. The plaque still bears the retailer's label to the reverse reading 'Gilman Collamore & Co, Union Sq. NY'. The plaque is rectangular in shape, and portrays a young girl, swathed in rich, red draped clothing, reaching upward to give food to a white dove perched on a wire. The girl, her hair bound up in the Orientalist fashion, wears an armband as well as hoop earrings. The interior in which the scene is set is hung with luxurious textiles and decorated with gilt detailing. The plaque is housed in a giltwood frame and is marked to the reverse with the sceptre mark of KPM porcelain, together with the retailer's label. The reverse also bears a written inscription reading 'Orientalisches Mädchen / L. Sturm', the title translating to 'Oriental girl...

The Derby Porcelain plate is superbly painted with a Marsh Hibiscus botanical specimen with richly gilded borders with swans and stylized flowerheads on a rich salmon ground.y gilded borders with swans and stylized flowerheads are on a rich salmon ground. The flower is named on the reverse: "Marsh Hibiscus". Diameter: 8 7/8 inches (22.5 cm) Mark: crown, crossed batons, and D mark in red, numerals 4 & 13 in yellow & green inside foot rim. John Brewer, (1764-1816) John was the elder of two brothers who both worked at Derby. Their parents were both artists and from 1762-1767 had studios in London at Rupert Street. Brewer started working at Derby in 1795. He was a talented watercolorist and had never applied his art to porcelain painting. A Beautiful Late 19th century Berlin K.P.M. – Vienna style porcelain rectangular plaque of the five senses Signed Knoeller Finely painted after Hans Makart with the five vertical panels, each depicting a female nude against an exotic naturalistic background, emblematic of a senses, the reserves enriched with gilt stylized vine. Impressed K.P.M and scepter marks, painted blue Beehive mark, within a giltwood frame. Hans Makart, was an Austrian allegorical painter and designer (1840-1884) who trained at the Vienna Academy between 1850 and 1851 under Johann Fischbach. Makart rejected the established rules of classicism, preferring to embrace the sensual expression of color. An important and extremely large pair of Magenta Ground Vienna Porcelain Exhibition vases. Austrian, circa 1900. Each vase with blue underglazed ‘Beehive’ mark to interior of neck. Each vase is finely painted with classical scenes to the front and allegorical scenes to the back on a rich magenta ground with gilt foliate decoration. The vases are mounted by extraordinary gilt handles headed by winged female masks to the sides and grotesque masks to the shoulders. The spreading necks decorated with Greek key decoration are surmounted by domed covers and the vases are raised on baluster form supports put down on drum bases finely painted with panels stylised arabesque. The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1718 only eight years after Johann Friedrich Bottger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus had succeeded in unearthing the secret of Porcelain Manufacture for August the Strong, Elector of Saxony. On May 25, 1718, Emperor Karl VI signed a "special privilege" awarding Claudius Innocentius du Paquier the exclusive right to produce porcelain in the Austrian crown lands. Production being almost exclusively for the imperial household and the court nobility. During the rococo era, Empress Maria Theresia placed the company under imperial ownership and it was during this period that the manufactory began to produce the famous rococo genre scenes after Watteau. Under the management of Conrad Sorgel von Sorgenthal, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory achieved an international reputation for its neo-classical style. After the wars with France brought the manufactory to the brink of ruin, the Vienna Congress at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century gave porcelain from Vienna a renewed upswing.
