On the most recent episode of And Just Like That…, viewers find Carrie Bradshaw handling a couple of problems that are very relatable, especially for fellow New Yorkers. First, while writing out on her back patio, Bradshaw is confronted by an avalanche of rats that emerge from behind a bush. Her backyard is promptly cleaned out, an exterminator hired and a landscape designer met with to reimagine the whole space. Her second problem — whether to purchase a special piece of furniture — is not quite so easily solved.

“I’ve been stalking this table online,” Bradshaw writes in a text to her long-distance beau, Aidan, referring to an item on 1stDibs described as a “1970’s Midcentury Italian Wood and Glass Dining Room Table.” “It’s got woodwork like you and style like me and it’s a little weird like us right now. I’m really afraid someone else is gonna get it so let me know your thoughts ASAP.” Aidan’s response? An unceremonious thumbs-down emoji. However obsession-worthy the table is for Bradshaw, she clearly doesn’t have a go-ahead from her boyfriend — or even a clear understanding of why he nixed it.

Bradshaw’s concerns about her find’s being snatched away from her are totally warranted, as anyone who shops vintage furniture knows. (And not agreeing on an item of furniture is an issue familiar to couples the world over.) Yet the episode ends without any indication of whether she’ll pull the trigger on it even without Aidan’s approval. And we can’t help but wonder if that negative emoji isn’t a sign of problems much bigger than mismatched tastes.
