How Much is a White Dangle Earring?
Why Gold Shines in Jewelry Craftsmanship
Gold is the feel-good metal, the serotonin of jewelry. Wear vintage and antique gold necklaces, watches, gold bracelets or gold rings and you feel happy, you feel dressed, you feel, well, yourself.
Gold, especially yellow gold, with its rich patina and ancient pedigree going back thousands of years, is the steady standby, the well-mannered metal of choice. Any discussion of this lustrous metal comes down to a basic truth: Gold is elementary, my dear. Gold jewelry that couples the mystique of the metal with superb design and craftsmanship achieves the status of an enduring classic. Many luxury houses have given us some of our most treasured and lasting examples of gold jewelry over the years.
Since its founding, in 1837, Tiffany & Co. has built its reputation on its company jewelry as well as its coterie of boutique designers, which has included Jean Schlumberger, Donald Claflin, Angela Cummings and Elsa Peretti. There are numerous gold Tiffany classics worth citing. Some are accented with gemstones, but all stand out for their design and the workmanship displayed.
For the woman who prefers a minimalist look, the Tiffany & Co. twist bangle (thin, slightly ovoid) is stylishly simple. For Cummings devotees, signature pieces feature hard stone inlay, such as her pairs of gold ear clips inlaid with black jade (a play on the classic Chanel black and tan), or bangles whose design recalls ocean waves, with undulating lines of lapis lazuli and mother-of-pearl. And just about any design by the great Jean Schlumberger is by definition a classic.
Even had he eschewed stones and diamonds, Southern-born David Webb would be hailed for the vast arsenal of heavy gold jewelry he designed. Gold, usually hammered or textured in some manner, defines great David Webb jewelry. The self-taught jeweler made very au courant pieces while drawing inspiration from ancient and out-of-the-way sources — East meets West in the commanding gold necklaces made by Webb in the early 1970s. The same could be said for his endlessly varied gold cuffs.
In Europe, many houses have given us gold jewelry that sets the highest standard for excellence, pieces that were highly sought after when they were made and continue to be so.
Numerous designs from Cartier are homages to gold. There are the classic Trinity rings, necklaces and bracelets — trifectas of yellow, white and rose gold. As a testament to the power of love, consider the endurance of the Cartier Love bracelet.
Aldo Cipullo, Cartier’s top in-house designer from the late 1960s into the early ’70s, made history in 1969 with the Love bracelet. Cipullo frequently said that the Love bracelet was born of a sleepless night contemplating a love affair gone wrong and his realization that “the only remnants he possessed of the romance were memories.” He distilled the urge to keep a loved one close into a slim 18-karat gold bangle.
BVLGARI and its coin jewelry, gemme nummarie, hit the jackpot when the line launched in the 1960s. The line has been perennially popular. BVLGARI coin jewelry features ancient Greek and Roman coins embedded in striking gold mounts, usually hung on thick link necklaces of varying lengths. In the 1970s, BVLGARI introduced the Tubogas line, most often made in yellow gold. The Tubogas watches are classics, and then there is the Serpenti, the house's outstanding snake-themed watches and bracelets.
A collection called Monete that incorporated the gold coins is one of several iconic BVLGARI lines that debuted in the 1970s and ’80s, catering to a new generation of empowered women. Just as designers like Halston and Yves Saint Laurent were popularizing fuss-free ready-to-wear fashion for women on the go, BVLGARI offered jewels to be lived in.
Since Van Cleef & Arpels opened its Place Vendôme doors in 1906, collection after collection of jewelry classics have enchanted the public. As predominantly expressed in a honeycomb of gold, there is the Ludo watch and accessories, circa the 1920s, and the golden Zip necklace, 1951, whose ingenious transformation of the traditional zipper was originally proposed by the Duchess of Windsor. Van Cleef's Alhambra, with its Moroccan motif, was introduced in 1968 and from the start its popularity pivoted on royalty and celebrity status. It remains one of VCA’s most popular and collected styles.
Mention must be made of Buccellati, whose name is synonymous with gold so finely spun that it suggests tapestry. The house’s many gold bracelets, typically embellished with a few or many diamonds, signified taste and distinction and are always in favor on the secondary market. Other important mid-20th-century houses known for their gold-themed jewelry include Hermès and Ilias Lalaounis.

The Legacy of Diamond in Jewelry Design
Antique diamond rings, diamond tiaras and dazzling vintage diamond earrings are on the wish lists of every lover of fine jewelry. And diamonds and diamond jewelry are primarily associated with storybook engagements and red-carpet grand entrances — indeed, this ultra-cherished gemstone has a dramatic history on its hands.
From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. But what makes the diamond so special? Each stone — whether it’s rubies, sapphires or another stone — is unique and important in its own right. April babies might claim diamonds for themselves, but just about everyone wants this kind of sparkle in their lives!
There are several factors that set diamonds apart from other stones, and these points are important to our gem education.
Diamonds are minerals. They are made up of almost entirely of carbon (carbon comprises 99.95 percent; the remainder consists of various trace elements). Diamonds are the hardest gemstones, ranking number 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Even its name, diamond, is rooted in the Greek adamas, or unconquerable. The only object that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth at very high temperatures (1,652–2,372 degrees Fahrenheit at depths between 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface) and are carried up by volcanic activity. Diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality.
In the 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America developed the 4Cs grading system to classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut and carat weight. Not all diamonds are created equal (there are diamonds, and then there are diamonds). The value of the diamond depends on the clarity (flawless diamonds are very rare but a diamond's value decreases if there are many blemishes or inclusions), color (the less color the higher the grade), cut (how the diamond’s facets catch the light, certain cuts of diamonds show off the stone better than others) and carat weight (the bigger, the better).
When you start shopping for a diamond engagement ring, always prioritize the cut, which plays the largest role in the diamond's beauty (taking the time to clean your diamond ring at least every six months or so plays a role in maintaining said beauty). And on 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement rings, vintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings.

Finding the Right Dangle-earrings for You
Earrings have a rich, diverse history, and while there are many types of this accessory to choose from, the dangle style is one of the most enduring designs. Today antique and vintage dangle earrings are timeless adornments that can make any outfit instantly more glamorous.
One of the oldest known pairs of dangle earrings was made of jade between 7,500 and 8,200 years ago in Inner Mongolia. Hoop earrings — of which there have been countless variations — are as old as Ancient Mesopotamia, and Ancient Egyptians wore dangle earrings that had sacred symbolism as part of their jewelry practices. In ancient Rome, dangle earrings with pearls and other precious materials were popular.
Dangle earrings vary in length, but they are all designed to cascade off the ears. Some dangle earrings barely fall past the bottom of the earlobe while others fall low enough to graze the shoulders or even fall past them. During the Renaissance period, women wore up-do hairstyles so they could show off their dangle earrings. Even noblemen joined the trend, donning a sole dangle earring adorned with a pearl.
Georgian women preferred heavy girandole earrings that featured candelabra-like arrangements of precious metal and stones. Dangle earrings in the 19th century were simpler, often featuring a single suspended gemstone in a drop-earring style. Going into the 20th century, screw-back earrings and clip-ons became popular, leading to more minimal stud designs. However, dangle earrings have always come back into fashion.
Whether they are made with diamonds, beads or feathers, dangle earrings are statement pieces reflecting the shifting styles over the years. Find the perfect antique and vintage dangle earrings for any occasion on 1stDibs.
- What is a dangle earring?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021A dangle earring is an earring that hangs below the earlobe. The length, style or material of an dangle earring can vary.
- 1stDibs ExpertDecember 4, 2023Yes, dangling earrings can be professional. Some people feel that earrings in the workplace should hang no more than 0.5 to 0.75 inches below the ear to prevent distractions, so longer earrings may not be suitable for pairing with workwear. Consider the standards for attire at your place of business when selecting your earrings, as dress codes vary from organization to organization. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of dangle earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023Dangling earrings are typically just called dangle earrings. Some people may also refer to their backings when saying the names of dangle earrings. For example, fish hook dangle earrings hang from curved wires, while lever-back dangle earrings have a hinged closure that latches shut for added security. Explore a large collection of dangle earrings on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023What dangle earrings symbolize is a matter of interpretation. Some people believe that dangle earrings are symbols of femininity due to the way they swing and sway, but others don't assign any special meaning to them. Earrings in specific shapes have meaning as well. For example, cross earrings may represent a person's religious faith, while four-leaf clovers may be associated with good luck. On 1stDibs, explore a large selection of dangle earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023No, drop and dangle earrings are not the same. Although both types of earrings hang below the ear, their designs are different. Dangle earrings swing when you move, while drop earrings remain stationary. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of dangle and drop earrings from some of the world's top dealers.
- Are dangling earrings good?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023Yes, dangling earrings can be good options. An understated pair of dangle earrings can be suitable for work or worn to dress up a casual outfit like jeans and a sweater. Larger dangle earrings can make a dramatic statement for a special occasion or an evening out. It's a good idea to remove dangle earrings before active activities like sports and workouts because they could get caught on something. Shop a wide range of dangle earrings on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertDecember 4, 2023Dangling earrings are attractive for a variety of reasons. Also called dangle earrings, they draw the eye downward and can help to visually lengthen the face and neck. Many people also find the swinging movement of dangle earrings to be playful or alluring. Dangle earrings come in many sizes, styles and materials, giving you many options to consider. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of dangle earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023The difference between a drop earring and a dangle earring is how it hangs. A drop earring extends down below the earlobe but is stationary, while a pair of dangle earrings’ design allows it to swing. On 1stDibs, find a selection of earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023Whether dangle earrings are appropriate for work depends on the setting, which can include standards for safety as well as dress codes. Work around machinery or moving parts can be hazardous with dangle earrings or other loose accessories. In some workplaces, stud earrings may be the norm, while in others, understated dangle earrings like those set with small pearls or diamonds may be appropriate. There are also workplaces where large statement earrings that dangle may be acceptable attire. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of dangle earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023Dangle stud earrings are generally just called dangle earrings. However, dangle stud is actually a misnomer, as the term "stud" refers to an earring that doesn't dangle or hang below the ear. When people say "dangle stud," they usually mean a dangle earring that hangs from a post -- a metal rod that fits through the ear and is fastened by a push-on backing. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of stud and dangle earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertDecember 12, 2023While motivations differ, people generally wear dangling earrings because they like how they look. Since they hang below the ear and swing when you move, dangle earrings catch attention and draw the eye. Long earrings can also visually lengthen the face, and the longest ones can accentuate the collarbones and shoulders. Explore a large collection of dangle earrings on 1stDibs.
- Can guys wear dangling earrings?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023Yes, guys can wear dangling earrings. Men can feel free to wear whatever type of earrings appeal to them. Dangle earrings with charms depicting crosses, feathers and infinity symbols are common picks for men, as are dangle earrings with gemstones like diamonds, rubies or emeralds. Shop a variety of earrings for men on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023Non-dangling earrings are usually called studs. However, some people refer to them as post earrings. Because they're free of hanging elements, stud earrings are a great option for everyday wear. Find a wide range of antique, vintage and contemporary stud earrings from some of the world's top dealers on 1stDibs.
- Are white gold earrings good?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023Yes, white gold earrings can be good options. Many people love the cool, sleek appearance of the metal, and the color of white gold can coordinate with other jewelry made of platinum and sterling silver, making it highly versatile. Plus, white gold offers the durability of gold metal, particularly if you opt for a strong alloy like 14- or 18-karat gold. On 1stDibs, explore a large selection of white gold earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023Yes, you can generally wear white gold earrings every day. However, you'll need to care for your jewelry properly to ensure that it stands the test of time. White gold can fade and require replating, but cleaning it regularly according to the maker's instructions can slow this process. Also, remove your earrings before swimming or showering. Shop a large selection of white gold earrings on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023Whether white gold or yellow gold is better for diamond earrings is a matter of personal preference. Due to its cool color, white gold will blend in with diamonds and keep the eye focused on the gemstones. Yellow gold will add warm color to earrings and make a bold contrast with the diamonds. Explore a large collection of diamond earrings on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023The difference between 14K and 18K white gold stud earrings comes down to the content of the precious metal alloy. Stud earrings made of 14-karat white gold are 58.3% gold and 41.7% base metal, while 18-karat gold is 75% pure gold and 25% other metals. As a result, 14-karat white gold tends to be stronger and more resistant to scratching, and 18-karat gold will have a more noticeable warm-glowing yellow tinge. On 1stDibs, shop a range of white gold stud earrings.
