This rare antique religious work / object of art, circa 1750, most likely commissioned by the Catholic Church of Spain, destined to be prominently displayed as an altarpiece / retablo or as part of a much larger reredo, directly behind the main altar at a Spanish or Continental European Catholic Church (French, Italian, Iberian, Portuguese)
The Crucified Christ, displayed mounted on a later faded red fabric upholstered shaped backboard plaque with textured gilt border. The exceptional hand sculpted, carved, gessoed, polychrome painted figure depicting bloodied Jesus, with crown of thorns atop his head, only wearing a undulating shaped cloth around his loin, arms extended and feet crossed, spear head form iron nails through both. The verso covered in an old paper printed backing with metal hook hardware at top for wall hanging.

Born in Switzerland in the 18th century, likely in the Swiss Alps near the French border, hand-crafted of high-quality solid oak, the Baroque period table is in exceptional shape, very strong and sturdy, excellent craftsmanship, quality and detailing throughout.
Having a rectangular two board top with banded inlay, above a single large frieze drawer, retaining the original forged iron handle, the sides accented with wooden pegged mortise through-tenoned joinery that allows the tabletop to lift off the base quickly, the pegs over a shaped apron with heart form cutout and carved scalloped edge ornamentation, rising on four hand turned splayed baluster-form tapered legs joined by a plank box stretcher, ending in ball feet.

Acquired from the estate of the late T. Boone Pickens (1928-2019). An American business magnate, billionaire, financier, and philanthropist.

Since its establishment, circa 1860, Maison Baguès has been an emblem of French elegance and sophistication in luxury interior design, originally the finest lighting, expanding into the finest quality furniture and decorative accessories. Each piece the firm makes is hand-assembled using traditional techniques in order to emphasize the elegant excellence of their detailed artisanal work. Still the epitome of savoir-faire, Maison Baguès’ luxurious pieces are prized for their craftsmanship, beauty and harmony.
The master metalsmith Noël Baguès founded the company as specialists in liturgical bronzes, but by 1880 the company had expanded into the production of bronze light fixtures in response to the development of electrical lighting. Carried on by Noël’s son Eugène and grandsons Victor and Robert, Maison Baguès continued to progress, adding intricately detailed iron lighting collections in the 1920s as well as stair banisters, gates and accessory tables.
Baguès began selling internationally in the interwar period, expanding the company’s operation to New York, Rome and Cairo. Noted for their high-end handcrafted work, such as complex carved sconces and hand-strung crystal chandeliers, Maison Baguès appealed to an elite clientele. While Baguès’ Art Deco crystal lighting fixtures drew the most attention, the company was also known for bespoke metalwork that drew commissions from important interior designers and decorating firms such as Maison Jansen and Raymond Subes. In 1928, eminent bourgeoisie décorateur Armand-Albert Rateau famously used a selection of Maison Baguès accessories to furnish the townhouse interiors of haute couturist Jeanne Lanvin. Beyond Rateau, the atelier was commissioned by many chic interiors icons like Raymond Subes and the legendary decorating firm Maison Jansen. Exquisitely handcrafted using only the finest materials and highest level of craftsmanship, the mid-century antique reproduction lavishly finished in Neoclassical Louis XVI taste, having an extensively inlaid oval shaped top, richly decorated marquetry at the center features intricate floral motif, wonderfully designed and exceptionally executed built-in hide-a-way extension leaves that rest under the table in the manner of Maison Jansen, sliding out to extend the length of the table from 72 to 107 inches. The frieze luxuriously decorated with gilt bronze mounted running ornamentation with beaded trim, accented by stylized foliate gilded bronze embellishments, above fluted tapered legs. Signed J.P.
