About the Item

A very fine quality antique Georgian drop-leaf table, likely English or Irish, George III Period (1760-1820), featuring a rare and magnificent highly figured curly cherry top with outstanding grain detail, color and warmth. Having large D-shaped panels to the sides, once the leaves are raised and tabletop extended the top morphs from narrow and rectangular to a large oval shape, rising gracefully on four richly sculptured hand carved solid cherrywood Queen Anne style cabriole legs, terminating in pad feet. This remarkable hand-crafted antique, circa 1780, displays superb quality craftsmanship and construction, with hand cut dovetailing, pegged mortise tenoned joinery, and strong wooden hinges that allow the gateleg to smoothly swing out in order to support the massive leaves. Dimensions: (approx) 29.5" High, 39" Long, 18.75" Wide; Open/extended: 57" Wide Versatile: A true testament to the era's emphasis on social gatherings, formal dining, sophisticated style, and refined multi-functional furniture, this antique table is as warm and handsome as it is functional, having the ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses, including as a sofa table or up against the wall as a hall console, placed in the the middle of the room as a center table or small scale dining table - wake table, in the kitchen as a pembroke breakfast table, or gathered around as a card games table.
