Daisy - bright, colourful, expressive, gestural abstract, acrylic on paper
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this expressive, colourful abstract by Milly Ristvedt a melange of complementary colours appear to dance across the paper. Ristvedt is a master colourist and this painting from the seventies shows her early skills at juxtaposing colour—generous brush strokes of pink, turquoise, green, blue, red, orange and burgundy. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings ‘were more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “(I have an) enduring belief in colour in painting as a language that can speak to mind, body, and soul.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski and Frank Stella. Her work has been included in many publications. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2004 and honoured with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. She has won seven Canada Council awards and two Ontario Arts Council awards and had over 50 solo exhibitions and been part of countless group shows. Ristvedt's work can be found in major public collections throughout North America. Milly Ristvedt is represented exclusively by the Oeno Gallery.

A Country Like You (Le Pays Qui te Ressemble) - abstract, acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
This lyrical, colourful abstract painting is by Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak- one in a series created in collaboration with an Italian artist, Angela Letizia Renzi, a lover of literature and linguistics. In this dynamic composition, expressive, gestural lines and swaths of colour—yellow, green, turquoise, white, melon and brown flow across the canvas. Tosczak is perhaps best known for his beautiful bronze figurative sculptures. This painting was inspired by a poem entitled ‘L’invitation au voyage” written by C. Baudelaire, a famous French poet. ‘Au pays qui te ressemble’ means ‘the country that resembles you’. “The collaboration, which has its beginnings in the picturesque setting of Lake Como, continues, more productive than ever, on an island in the heart of the Mediterranean animated by the tide, the motion of the waves, the active volcano Etna and tales of local mythology.” Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...

The Satyr is Turned into Salt Water - colorful, abstract, acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Inspired by a famous Italian sculpture, this expressive series of abstract paintings in vivid colours was created by Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak in collaboration with an Italian artist. Gestural brushstrokes of bright yellow, green, sky blue, melon white and a touch of pink swirl about the canvas in this dynamic composition. Tosczak is perhaps best known for his beautiful figurative sculptures. His collaborator in this series, Italian artist Angela Letizia Renzi is a ‘lover of literature and linguistics.’ “In 1998, a fisherman from Mazara del Vallo brought a bronze sculpture with mutilated arms and legs to the surface: the Satyr, a figure halfway between the human and animal worlds.” Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Colapesce Sinks into the Depths of the Ionian Sea - abstract, acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
At once elegant and expressive, this dynamic and colourful abstract painting is one in a series created by Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak in collaboration with an Italian artist. The colour palette is vivid—deep blue, yellow, orange, green, pink turquoise and melon. Tosczak is perhaps best known for his beautiful figurative sculptural work. Angela Letizia Renzi, the Italian artist who worked with Tosczak is a ‘lover of literature and linguistics.’ This acrylic painting was inspired by an Italian myth—the story of a young man who saved the island of Sicily from sinking by diving underwater and shouldering the columns that hold up the island. Renzi and Tosczak paint these canvases together and at the same time. Their artistic interaction is important to the works they create. “The philosophical artistic formation of one and the literary humanistic of the other, are intertwined in a common vocabulary, a visual language of colour, gesture and form: this is our lexicon, our morphosyntax, the grammar of our language." Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Artemis and the Cloud Over Arethusa - colorful, abstract, acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Washes of colour in blues, orange, and green are expressed in gestural brush strokes in this abstract painting by visual artist Richard Tosczak. Working in collaboration with an Italian artist who is a ‘lover of literature and linguistics’, Angela Letizia Renzi, the two artists have created a series of works that draw inspiration from beloved Italian myths. This colourful acrylic represents the legend of a beautiful nymph named Arethusa who was threatened by the river god, Alpheus and rescued by Apollo’s twin sister, the goddess Artemis who creates a cloud to hide her. Renzi and Tosczak paint these canvases together and at the same time. Their artistic interaction is important to the works they create. “… This is our lexicon, our morphosyntax, the grammar of our language.” Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. Havana No 4, Yellow - bold, bright, colorful, abstract, modernist, oil on canvas
By David Sorensen
Located in Bloomfield, ON
A vibrant culture is captured in colour and dynamic form in this lively abstract painting by David Sorensen. After visiting Cuba in 1999, the Canadian artist created a series of paintings. The light, the bright colours and the rich atmosphere of life in Havana inspired Sorensen’s colour palette—a brilliant square of yellow in the center, surrounded by graphic shapes in red, orange, lime green, blue and black. Lines of blue and black create a grid-like pattern that runs both horizontally and vertically across the canvas. “Through the medium of his art, a bridge is built between inner sensation and outer world experience, illusion and reality, what we cannot see and what we see, life and afterlife.” John K. Grande, Montreal poet and writer Born in Vancouver Sorensen (1937-2011) studied at UBC and the Vancouver School of Art. His teachers were renowned—Arthur Erikson...

Havana No 5, Blue - bold, bright, colorful, abstract, modernist, oil on canvas
By David Sorensen
Located in Bloomfield, ON
When David Sorensen visited Havana, Cuba in 1999 he was captivated by the rich textural atmosphere of the city. Using a spatula and paintbrush he created a series of abstract paintings in bright colours and graphic form. No 5 features a sky-blue square in the center, laid over a field of similar shapes in various sizes. Thick lines that run both vertically and horizontally across the canvas add drama. The colour palette—orange, yellow, red, and indigo is both joyful and intense.

Havana No 6, Red - bold, bright, colorful, abstract, modernist, oil on canvas
By David Sorensen
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this colourful abstract painting by David Sorensen, bright red draws the viewer’s eye. The Canadian artist completed a series of oils after visiting Havana, Cuba in 1999. The Havana series was created using a spatula and paintbrush. The result is highly textured pieces rendered in vivid colours—graphic shapes of lime green, orange, indigo and brown. A grid-like pattern of thick vertical and horizontal lines adds visual drama and contrast. “To me, there is still this celebration worth the paint. And it’s about an open door that the artist used to call muse.” David Sorensen Born in Vancouver Sorensen (1937-2011) studied at UBC and the Vancouver School of Art.
