About the Item

Curated bold brush strokes stand out against a velvety black background. This is Pat Services’ abstract series called, ‘The Black Velvet Paintings.’ Inspired, as always by the landscape and the natural world, Service’s minimalist images in turquoise, white and a rich brown contrast beautifully with the black backdrop. "You know those treasures we can still find in second-hand stores, the paintings painted on real velvet? They gave me the idea of starting with a black canvas, which is the opposite of how I have traditionally worked.” Pat Service Service acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and later studied art at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Service’s work is held in private collections in North America, Britain, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong and in several museum collections around the world.
