About the Item
Considered one of Canada’s finest landscape artists, Pat Service’s work has evolved from classic form to minimalism. This is one of a series of paintings she created to celebrate her love of nature and specifically the unique character of trees. This piece—bright colours—in blue, red and yellow with a bold ‘pine tree ‘form pops against the jet-black backdrop.
“Mister ‘Top Hat’ is more formal, spreading his branches out in a definite sort of way, not fooling around: ‘this is me and this is who I am’. The name ‘Top Hat’ suits this more sophisticated way of being.” Pat Service
She acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and later studied art at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Service’s work is held in private collections in North America, Britain, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
