A jacket by Franco Moschino for Cheap and Chic - Italy Circa 1990

About the Item

Circa 1990-1992 Italy Iconic Cheap and Chic by Moschino jacket from the most creative period of Franco Moschino, who died in 1994. Slim-fit jacket in black acetate crepe with folded-down collar and long sleeves. Fully piped with white cotton croquet to emphasise the cut. Applied embroidery in bright yellow, orange, green, red and yellow, forming hearts, palm trees, sunshine, doves and human figures in swimming costumes! A mischievous, satirical nod to the works of painters Henri Matisse, Georges Braques and Picasso. Front fastening with three buttons covered in the same material, with three small buttons on the cuffs. Lined in white and black striped rayon silk, with the label Cheap and Chic by Moschino, Made in Italy. No flaws. Very good colour and condition. Dimensions: size 40 France equivalent. Height 71 cm, sleeves 62 cm, chest 93 cm, waist 88 cm, hips 108 cm Franco Moschino made his debut in 1983 and launched Moschino Couture! the same year. Initially designing casual wear and jeans, he expanded his collection to include lingerie, eveningwear, shoes, menswear and fragrances. In 1988, he launched a less expensive line, Cheap and Chic. His designs are highly innovative and unusual, and he has been dubbed the Jean-Paul Gaultier of Italian fashion for his highly innovative designs, but their styles are different; Moschino uses basic shapes and traditional methods. He also poked fun at fashion classics such as the Chanel jacket with its garish finishes and details. Many people flocked to wear his clothes, becoming a success and a household name in the industry he was satirising.

Lucien Lelong (1889-1958) is a key figure in the history of French haute couture. He designed his first collection in 1914 and took over the family business in 1919 to become successful in the 1920s. In 1934 he launched the first ready-to-wear collection under the label "Edition". Installed at 16 avenue Matignon in Paris, he created in 1925 the "kinetic" silhouette, i.e. a supple, modern, dynamic line. He was the first to imagine, a decade later, the luxury ready-to-wear and to think of the unity of a production from clothing to accessories and perfumes, considering fashion as much in its aesthetic dimension, as in its industrial and commercial dimension. That same year, he made his first trip to the United States. President of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture from 1937 to 1945, he trained Christian Dior, Robert Piguet...

Velvet coat by Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche - Ballets Russes Opera collection
By Yves Saint Laurent, Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche
Located in Toulon, FR
Circa 1976 - 1978 France Raven black cut velvet coat jacket by Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche from the Ballets Russes Opera Collection dating from 1976. Fitted with an officer's collar, long sleeves and black plastic buttons with black cord piping. Skirted effect from the waist to the hips, emphasised by ribbons of black trimmings and echoed on the collar, cuffs, shoulders and bust. Fully lined in black cotton with the famous Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Paris Made in France label. No flaws to report. Very good colour and condition. Dimensions : Equivalent size 35/36 France. Height 77 cm, Shoulders 38 cm, Sleeves 65 cm, Chest 84 cm, Waist 72 cm, Hips 102 cm. Extract from the website of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Paris The ‘Opera - Ballets Russes’ collection, which was the first to be shown at the Inter-Continental Hotel, was a real show.  An admirer of the Ballets Russes founded by Serge de Diaghilev at the turn of the century, the costumes of Léon Bakst and the paintings of Orientalist artists, Yves Saint Laurent simultaneously evoked the Russia of the Tsars and that of the Opera. The colours were shimmering and the textiles luxurious: furs, muslins, silks, velvets, gold lamé, and so on. Yves Saint Laurent restored haute couture's ability to inspire.     Yves Saint Laurent said in Vogue, September 1976. It's a painter's collection, inspired by Delacroix's odalisques, Ingres's women, Van Eyck's Woman with a Pearl [in fact, Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl], La Tour, Rembrandt, Degas's dancers with their black corselet, but also by Senso's Visconti, the Civil War, Sternberg's Marlene. It's extremely egotistical because I've exhibited a lot more than dresses, everything I love in painting...
