Outstanding Japanese Biomorphic Abstract Sculpture by Harumi Nakashima 中島晴美
By Harumi Nakashima
Located in Amsterdam, NL
Outstanding and large porcelain biomorphic abstract sculpture covered in clear glaze and regularly distributed opulent cobalt blue polka dots of varying sizes, titled ‘Twisting Back, Multiplying’, hand-built by the highly praised Japanese ceramic artist Harumi Nakashima (1950). Signed at the bottom in a dot '1104 Haru'. Made in 2011. Documented on the website of the artist himself. Born in 1950 in Ena, Gifu Prefecture, Harumi Nakashima is known for his biomorphic porcelain sculptures decorated with opulent blue dots. He excels in clay creations far removed from both tradition and functionality. Taking great care to achieve a flawless surface and form, each piece is created over the course of six months. Nakashima's early reputation was cemented as one of the leading teachers at the Tajimi Pottery Design and Technical Center, having trained and influenced many of the promising young ceramicists of Japan since 1976. Nakashima has received leading prizes and tributes. With works collected by 20 public institutions the world over, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Faenza Ceramics Museum in Italy, he is one of Japan's most celebrated porcelain artist. Influenced by the blue sometsuke (under-glaze) motifs of traditional Japanese porcelain, Nakashima's motifs also use cobalt blue over-glaze. Yet unlike traditional methods, Nakashima's blue dots are painted over the body of a work after the main firing, and then fired into the white glaze of the porcelain with a second firing using the technique of "in-glazing", thereby leading to the sinking of the dots upon the white overglaze. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that his organic, sprawling and fluid porcelain bodies are entirely hand-built. As porcelain is extremely difficult to manipulate by free-hand, Nakashima intentionally uses this method to create not only tension, but an epic "battle with clay". He is currently based in the port city of Nagoya, and some of his more recent exhibitions are; 2021 Art Market San Francisco, Duane Reed Gallery...

Pair Chinese White Glazed Guanyin, Qing Dynasty, 18th Century, China
Located in Austin, TX
A sublime and rare pair of Chinese white glazed porcelain figures of Guanyin, attributed to Tang Ying (1682 - 1756), Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, China. This ethereal pair of white glazed porcelain figures depict the revered Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin. Guanyin is portrayed standing, wearing heavy robes that drape beautifully around her figure. Bare feet peek out from under the hem of the robes. Her hair piled in a high chignon and covered by a cowl. The treatment of the hair, finely textured, unglazed, and with remnants of darker pigment, is typical of works by Tang Yin (1682 - 1756), who was the head of the imperial porcelain works at Jingdezhen. Guanyin's beatific face is set in a serene smile, with a small, flat nose, and downcast, heavily lidded, almond shaped eyes. A simple beaded necklace graces her chest. Her hands held out, and may have once held attributes. The hands were originally removable, but have since been permanently attached. The figures crafted of a fine porcelain and glazed all over in a supple white glaze. One figure bears a label from the Rafi Mottahedeh collection to the back. Provenance: Chinese Porcelain Company...

Annamese Blue and White Porcelain Brushwasher Held by Parrot
Located in Atlanta, GA
Blue and white Annamese porcelain brush washer encircled by a parrot. Recovered from the wreck of a 15th century ship off the coast of Hoi An, among a group of sunken porcelain known as the Hoi An Hoard, found 230 feet below the surface of the water. Typical of the Hoi An pieces, the brush washer has a zoomorphic form, decorated with pale cobalt blue and exhibits the signature chalky, slightly ivory white body with a fine glaze. Through very few strokes, the painter evokes a very large personality for a small bird, exhibiting an almost child-like delightfulness. The bird is sharp-eyed and retains a vaguely bemused expression as its hooked beak pushes in the edge of the bowl. The designs on its wing are free, direct and supple. In good condition besides the fading characteristic of shipwreck porcelain...

Chinese Blue and White Fu Lion Headrest
Located in Chicago, IL
This small ceramic block is actually a form of Chinese headrest or neck pillow. Popular during the Qing dynasty, rigid headrests such as this were used by upper-class women to protect their elaborate hairstyles by elevating the head during slumber. This example dates to the late 20th century and is glazed in the blue-and-white style with a stencil-transfer design. Each side of the headrest has a quadrilobe cartouche framing two mythical fu lions playing with a brocade ball, a motif that evokes the idiom "may you and your descendant achieve high rank." A powerful and benevolent guardian, the fu lion (shizi) is the perfect force to protect against nightmares and bad energy. The playful scene is surrounded by a cracked ice pattern dotted with plum blossoms, symbols of winter and longevity. A geometric meander trims the corners and small bats frame coin...

Japanese Contemporary Gold Platinum Pink Green Porcelain Vase by Master Artist
Located in Takarazuka, JP
Extraordinary Japanese contemporary highly collectible use up quality decorative porcelain centerpiece/vase in a breathtaking flared shape, a masterpiece by a third generation master artist who is the descendant of an extended family of prolific Japanese porcelain and ceramic artists. The three generations have been experimenting and perfecting techniques featuring gold foil for seven decades. Inspired by centuries-old kinrande (gold enameled porcelain) styles of Imari, the artists have developed a technique known as haku-yui (braided foils) that combines high purity gold, platinum and silver foils to create a shimmering palette of light and color. Silver foil is used exclusively as a substrate for expressing a wide spectrum of vivid colors. Foils of differing material and color are applied separately and at the rate of “one shade per day” in a process reminiscent of multi-color woodblock printing, implying that the addition of each new shade exponentially increases the time and complexity of production. This exquisite vase showcases mesmerizing striped geometric pattern on its surface expressed by etching high purity platinum and gold foils plus silver foils tinted in shades of pink, green, blue, gold and platinum meticulously positioned using lacquer as an adhesive and sealed to the vase in a low-temperature firing process. The combination of so many vivid colors and shades expressed on a beautifully designed surface creates an unpredictable and ever shifting display of light and color. In this exquisite piece the artist has used platinum...
