Islamic Glazed Pottery Bowl with Kufic Calligraphy Nishapur Ware Provenance
Located in Atlanta, GA
An earthenware pottery bowl in conical shape supported by a short foot ring covered in white slip and decorated with black slip paint of calligraphy in Kufic script. This type of bowl is identified as Nishapur ware circa 10-11th century (in nowadays Iran). It was made either in Samanid Dynasty (819–999) or the successive Ghaznavid Empire (977–1186) before the Mongol invasion. The white glaze on the vessel's exterior was thinly applied, resulting in areas with streaks of opaque yellowing. The black slip paint was used to decorate the bowl in flowing Kufic script before a transparent top glaze was applied. The writing, consisting of cursive strokes in bell shape, is likely an Arabic Maxim. Under UV examination, the bowl shows some professionally restoration as described in condition. It comes with a custom-made acrylic stand as shown. Provenance: From an American collection, thereby descent. Purchased from Yacobs Gallery, London England, July 1998. Two digital copy the original hand-written documents...

Ceramic Bowl by Shigemori Yoko, Japanese Pottery exhibited in V&A Museum
Located in Fukuoka, JP
A striking hand-thrown ceramic bowl by celebrated Japanese artist Shigemori Yoko (1953–2021), known for her expressive, calligraphy-inspired brushwork and sculptural organic forms. This dynamic piece features an asymmetrical form with bold black abstract strokes against a smooth, white glaze — a signature style that blends traditional Japanese ceramic techniques with avant-garde sensibility. The gestural brushwork evokes spontaneous ink painting and speaks to the artist’s early training in painting before turning to ceramics. The exterior is subtly textured, with soft ridges from the wheel and slight warping that enhances the tactile, handmade quality of the bowl. Both sculptural and functional, the piece embodies wabi-sabi aesthetics and would make a striking centerpiece or collectible art object. Shigemori Yoko studied under master ceramicists Kondō Yutaka...

Korean Ceramic Faceted Wine Bottle Vase Joseon Dynasty
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Korean ceramic bottle with octagonal faceted form with underglaze copper red decoration. The robust bottle with the long neck and a relatively thick built was used to hold liquor such as wine and it was from Joseon dynasty, likely late period (circa mid-late 19th century). The bottle was covered in a milky white glaze with a pleasant warm yellow tint. It has an underglaze iron red paint of branches of gingko leaves on the front and the back side. The color was oxidated into an ochre brown hue instead of iron red. The octagonal form extends nicely from the opening to the base, continuing through the body and makes this bottle geometrically interesting. The rustic paint of the gingko leaves also render the piece a folky modern appeal. For three faceted wine bottles from different period of Joseon Dynasty, see illustration 2, 71 and 73 of "Five Centuries of Korean Ceramics Pottery and Porcelains of the Yi Dynasty...

Antique Chinese Porcelain Bencharong Bowl for the Thai Market, 18th century.
Located in Point Richmond, CA
Antique Chinese Porcelain Bowl for the Thai Market, 18th century. Bencharong enamel decoration with Buddhist imagery on a black background. This classic porcelain bowl form having a raised narrow foot rim and slightly everted mouth rim is richly decorated in bright polychrome enamels much favored by the nobility in eighteenth century Siam. This colorful style became known as “bencharong”, a term that derives from two Sanskrit words – panch (‘five’) and rong (‘colour’) and which relates to the number of colours used to decorate such porcelain. This bowl is decorated with typically Thai motifs. The sides are decorated with four Thepanom (Buddhist celestial beings) each wearing a broad necklace of petals and seated on a lotus within triangular cartouches that have a coral-red ground. Four Norasingh (mythical forest-dwelling semi-deity with a human head, torso, and arms but with the hind-quarters of a lion and the tail and hoofs of a deer) against black back grounds filled with flaming pink kranok motifs. This design is framed by two floral bands top and bottom and another double band on the interior mouth rim. The interior glazed in a soft turquoise green and remnants of a floral pattern roundel on center. Sets of porcelain such as this example were commissioned from the Jingdezhen kilns in China and exported to Thailand. 6-7/8 in. in diameter x 3-5/8 high (17.5 x 9cm) 16.7 oz. (475g.) Ayutthaya Period, 18th century. Provenance: German Private Collection. For similar examples see: William Warren & Luca Invernizzi Tettoni, Arts and Crafts of Thailand, Chronicle Books, San Francisco 1994, p.33. Early Porcelain Underglaze Dragon Ewer by Makuzu Kozan Meiji Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
A porcelain ewer with fine underglaze iron red, brown and blue decoration made by the legendary Japanese imperial potter Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916), this relatively rare piece is dated to circa Meiji 23rd to 26th year (1890-1893) based on the mark used on the base. This is the starting period when the artists departed from his high-relief and gold gilt period and started focusing on making porcelain pieces with underglaze paint and experimented new colors. The ewer form is also relatively rare in the artist's survived repertoire compared to other forms. The piece takes its shape from the prototype Chinese...

Massive Ceramic Jar Tsubo by Japanese Potter Tsujimura Yui
By Tsujimura Yui
Located in Atlanta, GA
A massive and magnificent ceramic Tsubo jar by Japanese potter Tsujimura Yui (1975-). Inspired by the techniques and aesthetics of the early medieval Sue ware, the artist hand builds an impressive voluminous oviform, irregular by intention, from a combination clay from both Shigaraki and Iga, coarse by nature and rich in feldspar. Fired on their sides horizontally, the surface of the thick wall tsubo is covered with streaks and drips of natural ash glazes in shades of green and blue, forming an abstract and mesmerizing pattern that resembles geothermal earth activity. Additional ashes are blown during the firing to accentuate the textures. Most recognizably, there are many circular marks scattered on the surface of his archaic looking vessels. That is resulted from using stacked tea bowls to prevent the conjoining of the vessels. After the firing, the stacked vessels are chipped away, leaving behind those circular impression, as well as deep pools of glaze which gather where they were placed. Born in 1975, Tsujimura Yui is the first son of the contemporary ceramic artist Tsujimura Shiro...
