Chinese Blue and White Fu Lion Headrest
Located in Chicago, IL
This small ceramic block is actually a form of Chinese headrest or neck pillow. Popular during the Qing dynasty, rigid headrests such as this were used by upper-class women to protect their elaborate hairstyles by elevating the head during slumber. This example dates to the late 20th century and is glazed in the blue-and-white style with a stencil-transfer design.
Each side of the headrest has a quadrilobe cartouche framing two mythical fu lions playing with a brocade ball, a motif that evokes the idiom "may you and your descendant achieve high rank." A powerful and benevolent guardian, the fu lion (shizi) is the perfect force to protect against nightmares and bad energy.
The playful scene is surrounded by a cracked ice pattern dotted with plum blossoms, symbols of winter and longevity. A geometric meander trims the corners and small bats frame coin...

Japanese Studio Ceramic Vase by Ken Matsuzaki with Original Tomobako
Located in Atlanta, GA
An impressive stoneware bottle form vase by contemporary Japanese studio potter Ken Matsuzaki (1950-) circa 2010s. The solid form takes its cue from Chinese traditional plum vase (Meiping) with raised and swelled shoulder and a small opening, yet it rises from a non-conventional pentagonal faceted base. The extraordinary surface was covered with Yohen Shino glaze in a deep iron hue. Thick white slips were applied in bold strokes to the lower portion of the vase. The abstract pattern calls to mind of the imagery of the iconic ocean waves found in traditional Japanese art. The presence of the vase is strong and none-compromising, reaching back to the past yet appearing utterly modern. It is marked by the artist underneath and comes with the original tomobako with title and author inscriptions and a wrapping cloth with the artist's seal.
"Ken Matsuzaki’s haptic ceramics bring a contemporary approach to traditional Japanese ceramicware, most notably 16th-century Oribe pottery...

Ceramic Bowl by Shigemori Yoko, Japanese Pottery exhibited in V&A Museum
Located in Fukuoka, JP
A striking hand-thrown ceramic bowl by celebrated Japanese artist Shigemori Yoko (1953–2021), known for her expressive, calligraphy-inspired brushwork and sculptural organic forms. This dynamic piece features an asymmetrical form with bold black abstract strokes against a smooth, white glaze — a signature style that blends traditional Japanese ceramic techniques with avant-garde sensibility.
The gestural brushwork evokes spontaneous ink painting and speaks to the artist’s early training in painting before turning to ceramics. The exterior is subtly textured, with soft ridges from the wheel and slight warping that enhances the tactile, handmade quality of the bowl. Both sculptural and functional, the piece embodies wabi-sabi aesthetics and would make a striking centerpiece or collectible art object.
Shigemori Yoko studied under master ceramicists Kondō Yutaka...

Early Porcelain Underglaze Dragon Ewer by Makuzu Kozan Meiji Period
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
A porcelain ewer with fine underglaze iron red, brown and blue decoration made by the legendary Japanese imperial potter Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916), this relatively rare piece is dated to circa Meiji 23rd to 26th year (1890-1893) based on the mark used on the base. This is the starting period when the artists departed from his high-relief and gold gilt period and started focusing on making porcelain pieces with underglaze paint and experimented new colors. The ewer form is also relatively rare in the artist's survived repertoire compared to other forms.
The piece takes its shape from the prototype Chinese...
