About the artist
Born in Edo as Harunobu Sugawara, Gakutei Yashima studied printmaking under Shuei and Hokkei. He moved to Osaka in the 1830s, where he designed landscape studies of his new home with a delicate and decorative style likely influenced by Hokusai. In addition to printmaking, he wrote Kyoka (comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. While a talented woodblock artist, Gakutei was also known throughout Japan as a writer. Known as Yunjian (Cloud Shoulder or Cloud Collar), this multi-lobed textile piece was a detachable collar worn around the shoulders as part of the traditional Chinese garment accessory. With its origin dated back to the Han Dynasty and being used until the end of Qing Dynasty, the form evolves with time, but much of the ornamentation and fundamental symbolism remains the same.
This striking example features a two-tiered design with seven lobes on each circle, all of which are variations of the shape of auspicious "ruyi", which represents the head of Lingzhi mushroom, a symbol of longevity. The inner lobes feature elaborate embroidery floral design with long and short satin stitches. Notably, one panel has a double gourd design, the symbol of fortune. The outer lobes show a simpler but bolder vision with the outlines of the designs lineated with metallic threads buddled in chain stitches. Small jade beads were used to link the piece together and most of them still remain. The piece as a whole has a very pleasant lilac purple color, delicate with the jade beads.
In Qing Dynasty, the silk collar with high quality was worn by noble or aristocratic women. The red color and the lotus boy symbol indicate that it was most likely part of the fashion accouterment worn during wedding ceremony.
The collar is beautifully float mounted within a double conforming mat in a giltwood frame and wood backing. A stunningly presented period piece with story to tell.

A truly magnificent and special work - this beautiful and exceptionally long string of Japanese hand-crafted natural wood (perhaps Rosewood) Buddhist Juzu mala beads. These rosary-type large prayer bead necklaces were used by Buddhist monks in temple prayers/rituals and worn by Samurai as amulets of protection. During the Edo period, Buddhist priests/monks and samurai warriors used to wrap the beads around their bodies and use the beads in their worshipping and meditation ceremonies. After reading the sutra once, one bead would be moved (some sects used them instead of wooden tally counters). It would take a tremendous amount of intense concentration and physical stamina to read the sutra while holding and counting/moving each individual prayer bead as well as a copious amount of time to move all the prayer beads to complete the sutra cycle. We have not come across another set of Juzu beads...

These are a very good pair of antique Chinese foo or lion dog sculptures, sometimes called temple lions, made of bronze, with good detail, which we date to the Qing dynasty, late 18th to early 19th Century.
These pieces are well cast with very good detail, showing wear to the high points as expected from use and polishing over a long period, the lustrous copper bronze metal below. The places on the castings where one would not normally polish ( eg. the underside, the back and neck area) are fairly rough to the touch in keeping with their age
