Late Edo Period Sannin-kanjyo Figures or Three Court Ladies w. Wood Box Japan

About the Item

Late Edo Period Dolls representing Sannin-kanjyo which means the three court ladies. They support and care for the emperor (Odairi-sama) and the empress consort (Ohina-sama). All are wearing a Japanese traditional dress (colored red and white). They probably were part of the Hina- Matsuri celebration. All with exquisite red hakama over white kimono with brocade overcoat w/ bronze accessories including a pitcher, a long handled server + wood table in a signed with Japanese characters meaning “official women” on the door of a wooden box. They are serving tea or sake to the Dairi-Bina, the Emperor and Empress. The bodies are most likely painted wood. The caligraphy on box front reads literally Official Woman but it may have a different meaning in Japanese,probably Court Ladies. Condition: Very Good condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. Slight discoloration of white garments, please view all images.
