About the Item

An icon of postmodern Italian design, this catchall/ashtray was conceived in the 1980s by Luigi Serafini for the Memphis Extrà line. Hand-crafted in Murano, it measures 25 × 20 × 2.5 cm and showcases the movement’s signature bold palette: a fluid red “S-curve,” a deep blue teardrop, and a playful black accent—all suspended within a sheet of crystal-clear glass. The freeform outline of the tray, with its softly undulating edge, perfectly complements the organic shapes of the inset colored elements. Expertly hot-worked and fused, each graphic motif appears to float just beneath the surface, creating captivating shadows and depth when illuminated. Beneath the glass, the acid-etched “Luigi Serafini” signature and “Memphis Extrà” mark attest to its authenticity. This piece exemplifies the audacious whimsy and technical mastery of 1980s Memphis design. Equally at home holding keys and coins or serving as a striking ashtray, it’s a conversation-starting object for any contemporary or vintage collection.
