Jaeger LeCoultre, Atmos Clock, Royale Gold, Manufactured in 1978

About the Item

Jaeger LeCoultre - Atmos Royale Switzerland Gold-plated brass Year of manufacture 1978 Dimensions: H x W x D: 27 x 23 x 14 cm Description: Atmos Royale Ref. 5814 in a completely gold-plated brass case. Glazed front door. Silver circular-cut chapter ring with black Roman hour numerals. The Jaeger LeCoultre logo can be seen below the XII and the word "ATMOS" is printed above the VI. The locking lever, the torsion pendulum, the spirit level and the knurled screws for levelling the watch are located below the dial ring. Serial number: 498870 Year of manufacture: 1978 The Atmos Royale of the first series was equipped with movement calibre 526 and was offered in different colour variants. The best-known of these models are certainly the one in a rhodium-plated case and the one offered here in a gold case. However, the watch was also available in lapis lazuli, bordeaux red, black and flamed red. I also have the red flamed model in my range, please feel free to contact me! Interesting facts: In 1927, the young engineer Jean-Léon Reutter presented the prototype of the Atmos clock he had developed. The response in the press was great and so he concluded a contract with the Compagnie générale de radiologie, which built and sold the "Atmos I" from 1930 under Reutter's direction. As there were repeated problems with the watches, the movements were manufactured by Le Coultre et Ciein Switzerland from 1933 and in 1935 the production rights for the Atmos clock were transferred to Ets. Ed. Jaeger in 1935. They focussed on developing a simpler and more robust motor and from 1938 the era of the Atmos from Jaeger-LeCoultre began. The "clock that lives on air" utilises the "breathing movements" of a gas-filled bellows caused by temperature fluctuations to wind the movement. The movement of the clock stands out with its cylindrical box on the back. It contains a bellows-shaped expansion chamber filled with chloroethyl, a gas that expands particularly strongly between 10 °C and 27 °C. A temperature difference of just one degree Celsius winds the watch for 48 hours. This interesting winding mechanism is complemented by an exquisite movement of extreme precision with a heavy torsion pendulum (rotating pendulum). The condition for the accuracy of the clock is a stable and vibration-free installation. [Source: Jean Lebet - Living on Air / Jürgen Abeler - Ullstein Uhrenbuch] Condition: Very nice, authentic case condition with slight traces of cleaning and wear commensurate with age. The movement is absolutely accurate and reliable. You can find out more about the various Atmos Royale models in the reference book: Jean Lebet - Living on Air p. 66
