Large Meissen Porcelain Figurine Group 'Apollo & Daphne', By Juechtzer, Ca. 1860

About the Item

Excellent large and rare Meissen figurine group from the 19th century: Apollo clothed with a cloak embraces Daphne from behind, who is fleeing from him and has already frozen into a laurel tree in a twisting movement.Based on a stepped, fluted square base with gold rims. The model for this creation is certainly the life-size sculpture by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, which is considered a special sculptural masterpiece due to its richness of movement. Created in 1622-1625, it can be admired today in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. Myth of Apollo and Daphne: When Apollo mocked Eros, the god of love, as a bad shot, Eros took revenge by shooting a love arrow with a golden tip at him and one with a leaden tip at Daphne. Apollo fell madly in love with Daphne, while Daphne, struck by an arrow from Eros with exactly the opposite effect, became unreceptive to that love. When Apollo tried to rape Daphne, she fled. Exhausted by Apollo's pursuit, she begged her father Peneios to change her - Apollo charming - shape. Thereupon her limbs froze and she turned into a laurel tree. The laurel has been sacred to Apollo ever since. In memory of Daphne he wore a laurel wreath or a cithara decorated with laurel. Modeller: CHRISTIAN GOTTFRIED JUECHTZER (1752 - 1812) was a famous sculptor and modeler of the Meissen manufactory, born in Meissen as the son of a porcelain painter. From 1769 he worked in the factory, initially as an apprentice and student of Kaendler. Juechtzer succeeded M. V. Acier in 1781, and in mid-1790 he was given supervision of the work. In 1794 he became a master modeller. Juechtzer specialized in the design of bisque porcelain. The model I 9 was created in 1786. This charming pair of Meissen porcelain figures celebrates the essence of Revelry. First modeled by the renowned Johann Joachim Kändler on bases by Peter Reinicke, circa 1767, these joyous groups depict musicians making merry by playing the French horn, flute, guitar and hurdy-gurdy, and gardeners carrying flowers in baskets and aprons. Two almost identical groups are featured in Meissen: Collector’s Catalogue by Laurence Mitchell. Figures by Kändler were especially popular and served as table decorations at courtly banquets. He took the reigns of the Meissen factory in 1733 and over the following 40 years created more than 900 models, many of which were considered the most important and beautiful ever produced. Many of his designs were so timeless and classic that they continued to be used well into the 19th century. Kändler was highly regarded especially for his allegorical representations and he was certainly at his best when designing the Four Continents...
