About the Item

Ettore Sottsass – Treetops Lamp, Memphis Milano, 1981 Painted metal with cast iron base. Certificate of authenticity included. Measurements: W 75 × D 24 × H 195 cm The Treetops Lamp is an iconic floor lamp designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1981 as part of the groundbreaking Memphis Milano collection, a movement that redefined the language of design in the 1980s with its bold use of form, color, and unconventional materials. Crafted in painted metal with a solid cast iron base for stability, the lamp features an adjustable light point, allowing the user to direct illumination with precision. Standing at an impressive 195 cm in height, Treetops functions not only as a lighting fixture but also as a striking sculptural presence, embodying the playful yet radical spirit of Memphis. Sottsass, founder of the Memphis group, sought to challenge traditional notions of modernist design, introducing objects that blurred the line between functional utility and artistic expression. The Treetops Lamp is a perfect example of this philosophy, merging practicality with avant-garde aesthetics. Bibliography: Philippe Thomé, Ettore Sottsass, Phaidon–Electa, 2014, p. 500. A rare collectible of Italian radical design, the Treetops Lamp remains a coveted work for both design enthusiasts and collectors of 20th-century decorative arts. Memphis Milano is the great cultural phenomenon of the 1980s that revolutionized creative and commercial logics in design. Born from the idea of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers and architects, in Milan, coupled in the years by famous designers from the international scene, Memphis turned upside down all of the existing parameters on living. Ettore Sottsass as the backbone of the group, design gained a new concept and expression through new shapes, materials and patterns, expanding the creative limits of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design. Its influence is still clear in various sectors of production and beyond.
