Maqbool Fida Husain Born ; 17 September 1915 Pandharpur, Maharashtra, British India Died : 9 June 2011 (aged 95) London, England, UK Nationality Indian (1915-2010) Qatari (2010–2011) Education Sir J. J. School of Art Known for Painting, drawing, writer, filmmaker Notable work Meenaxi a tale of three cities Through the eyes of a painter Movement Progressive Art Group Awards Padma Shri (1966) Padma Bhushan (1973) Padma Vibhushan (1991) Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s. His early association with the Progressive Artist's Group, or "PAG of Bombay" used modern technique, and was inspired by the "new" India after The Partition of 1947. His narrative paintings, executed in a modified Cubist style, can be caustic and funny as well as serious and sombre. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Mohandas K. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the British raj, and motifs of Indian urban and rural life. Early in his painting career, and until his death, he enjoyed depicting the lively and free spirit of horses in many of his works. Often referred to as the "Picasso of India", Husain is the most celebrated and internationally recognized Indian artist of the 20th century. Husain is primarily known for his paintings, but is also known for his drawings and his work as a printmaker, photographer, and filmmaker. Some of his later works stirred controversy, as they depicted traditional Deities of India in non traditional ways. He also directed a few movies. In 1967, he received the National Film Award for Best Experimental Film for Through The Eyes of a Painter.[3] In 2004, he directed Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities, a film he worked on with his artist son Owais Husain, which was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Husain was born on 17 september 1915 in Pandharpur to a Sulaymani Bohra family who trace their roots back to Gujarat within the last 200 years, and then originally to Yemen. He picked up taste in art through studying calligraphy while he stayed at a Madraasa in Baroda. Husain attended the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai. Early in his career Husain painted cinema posters in Mumbai. To earn extra money, he worked for a toy company designing and building toys. He often travelled to Gujarat to paint landscapes when he could afford to. This was a clique of young artists who wished to break with the nationalist traditions established by the Bengal school of art and to encourage an Indian avant-garde, engaged at an international level. The artists cite "The Partition" of India and Pakistan 14 August 1947, with its resulting religious rioting and heavy loss of life as their reason for forming The Progressive Artist's Group in Bombay in December 1947. The artists saw the Partition as a "turning point" for India, and their new style of art was urged on by, and was also a turning point for, (modern) Indian Art. Husain's first solo exhibit was in 1952 in Zurich. His first U.S.A. exhibit was at India House...

Where Every Breath Is A Prayer A Photographic Pilgrimage In Asia Hardcover Book
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Where Every Breath Is A Prayer: A Photographic Pilgrimage Into The Spiritual Heart Of Asia By Jon Ortner This is a beautiful large coffee table book. Edition first edition Binding hardcover PublisherStewart, Tabori & Chang Place Of Publication New York ,USA Date Published 1996 Keywords Buddhism Asia Spiritualism. With devotion and artistry, Photographer Jon Ortner has captured the essence of the sacred lands and ancient traditions of the world's most mysterious region. Retracing the journeys of holy men and shamans, he has traveled thousands of miles, over more than two decades, to portray spectacular landscapes, architectural marvels, and mystical peoples. His inspiring images-more than 300 in full color-vividly bring to life Asia's revered topography from the highest mountains and deepest gorges of the Himalayas to the once forbidden temples of Myanmar and Cambodia. Here also are the world's oldest city, Varanasi on India's Ganges River, majestic Angkor Wat, the largest temple ever built, and the volcanic peaks of Bali-magical landscapes infused with sanctity. His portraits of people are equally compelling, ranging from simply-clad ascetics engaged in ancient rites to gorgeously costumed dancers performing the same rites as their ancestors, visions that few Westerners have seen. The compelling narratives that accompany these haunting photographs trace the evolution of Hinduism and Buddhism, provide a travelogue of the region, and celebrate the teachings of these holy peoples...

Ice Cold, ‘A$AP Rocky’, Limited Ed Book with Black & Signed Fine Art Print
By TASCHEN
Located in Los Angeles, CA
The definitive photographic history of how hip-hop blinged out and redefined the world of jewelry, luxury, and style. Signed black-and-white pigment print on Canson Platine paper, 16 x 20 in.; hardcover volume in a slipcase, 9.8 x 13.4 in., 6.29 lb., 388 pages. Whether it’s diamond-encrusted grills, oversized “truck” style chains, bust-down Rolex and Patek Philippe watches, or a Tiffany necklace, jewelry is a cornerstone of hip-hop culture. Glittering, blinged-out jewels are the shining statement of a collective identity: unapologetic, charismatic, and street savvy. Spanning the history of hip-hop jewelry, from the 1980s to today, Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History is a stunning compilation of storytelling and visuals. Hundreds of extraordinary images of every major hip-hop artist on record celebrate how “ice” has become a proclamation of identity and self-expression. Starting with Run-DMC’s gold Adidas pendants and Eric B. & Rakim’s ostentatious dookie rope chains and Mercedes medallions, the jewelry then transforms from street style into a booming design culture. The hip-hop tradition of “show up and show out” reaches new heights with artists like Pharrell Williams, Jay-Z, Gucci Mane, and Cardi B...

Neil Leifer Guts and Glory: The Golden Age of American Football
By Neil Leifer, Gabriel Schechter, Jim Murray
Located in Los Angeles, CA
No pain, no gain. The most memorable moments since the birth of pro football in America. The best of sports photographer Neil Leifer’s 10,000 rolls of football pictures, including hundreds of previously unpublished images. Presented in a custom slipcase and limited to a total of 1,500 copies signed by the photographer, this Collector’s Edition is a companion to Neil Leifer’s instant sell-out success, Ballet in the Dirt: The Golden Age of Baseball, published by seller in 2007. In 1958, sports photographer Neil Leifer took the picture that remains one of his most famous to this day. The day he got the shot - Alan Ameche’s game-winning "Sudden Death" touchdown - was Leifer’s 16th birthday. This game, called "The Greatest Ever Played," signaled football’s emergence as America’s new national pastime; formerly half-empty stadiums welcomed sold-out crowds seemingly overnight, while football surpassed pro baseball and college football in national television ratings. Starting then, on any given Sunday Leifer was most likely shooting a football game somewhere in America. His 1961 photo of legendary Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle dropping back to pass landed Leifer his first cover for Sports Illustrated and cemented his close connection to the sport. While best known for his iconic photograph of Muhammad Ali towering over a fallen Sonny Liston, and for the enormous diversity of subjects he covered in and out of the sports world, it is his football pictures Leifer considers his best. This collection represents the best of his best, culled from over 10,000 rolls of film on the sport, including hundreds of previously unpublished pictures. It’s impossible to conceive of Peyton Manning hovering over an impromptu wood fire on the sidelines during a blizzard, but Leifer captured Tittle’s Giants doing exactly that during the coldest game in his living memory (the 1962 Championship in New York, a game "far colder than the famous Ice Bowl"). From Vince Lombardi...

The Glory of Byzantium and Early Christendom
Located in New York, NY
Byzantine art established the images of the Christian religion that are still current today: the appearance, dress and attributes of Biblical figures all owe their invention to these early artists. The Byzantine Empire spanned the fourth to the fifteenth century, bridging the Middle Ages from the late Roman Empire to the early Renaissance, and of all the world's empires, it is most clearly defined by its art. Presenting 300 artworks from the years 240 to 1453, The Glory of Byzantium and Early Christendom encapsulates the development of art in eastern Europe and eastern Mediterranean from the very early days of Christianity to the fall of Constantinople. Even when a more secular art developed during the early Renaissance, Byzantine art lived on as the dominant style for religious art, particularly in the Orthodox East. Nevertheless, a perception of Byzantine art as purely religious is misleading: while it included the production of glorious icons, it also encompassed metalwork, architecture, sculpture, wall painting and mosaics, but secular and Christian. From architecture to jewellery, from coins to paintings, from mosaics to book illuminations, the book explores Byzantine art in all its forms. Unique not only for its extensive variety of art forms, the book also has a vast geographic Scope, including art from Britain to Syria, from Spain to Turkey, from Egypt to Georgia. An introductory essay by Antony Eastmond summarizes the essence of Byzantine and early Christian art...

Made for Maharajas A Design Diary of Princely India By Amin Jaffer Hardcover
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Made for Maharajas A Design Diary of Princely India By Amin Jaffer and Martand Singh.Large hardcover coffee table book 2006.Great condition.Brings together a range of works made for Indian princes by western artistsIndian royalty's passion for western luxury goods reached its peak at the height of the British Raj (1857-1947) as Indian rulers traveled to Europe and began to model their lives along western lines. Commissioning architects to design palaces in modern or historic styles, purchasing fleets of cars, and ordering their family jewels to be reset by the most skilled European goldsmiths, Indian princes established themselves as the new creative patrons of European high design.Based equally in the archives of firms such as Louis Vuitton, Boucheron, Chaumet and Hermès, and in palace and private collections, this book explores the role of maharajas in an age of high spending and fashion. It brings together original designs with surviving objects, exploring for the first time the creative dialogue between Indian princes and the skilled tradesmen who produced wonders for their delectation. Married to the objects themselves are the absorbing and often humourous accounts of how maharajas indulged their tastes with unparalleled extravagance and aplomb. Made for Maharajas book by Amin Jaffer. The Indian princes of the British Raj lived lives of unparalleled opulence and luxury. Made for Maharajas returns readers to that resplendent era, presenting a selection of one-of-a-kind objects crafted to order by the outstanding European luxury goods manufacturers, fashion houses, and decorators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here are the custom-designed cars, jewelry, and extraordinary objéts d’art commissioned by maharajas, nawabs, nizams, and sultans from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, Harry Winston, and others, accompanied by anecdotes that illuminate this sumptuous way of life. Many of the illustrations in this book have never been previously reproduced outside of India, making this not only the first volume of its kind, but a remarkable keepsake that may never be duplicated in our lifetime. This volume explores the role of maharajas in this age of high spending and fashion. It brings together original designs with surviving objects, exploring for the first time the creative dialogue between Indian princes and the skilled tradesmen who produced wonders for their delectation. Amin Jaffer is a curator in the department of Asian Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where he specializes in Indian art in the age of European influence. Jaffer lectures frequently in Europe, America, and India and contributes regularly to journals and newspapers.
