Elda Chair by Joe Colombo for Comfort - 1960's Italy

About the Item

Iconic Elda Chair by Joe Colombo for Comfort - Collectible Design Masterpiece The Elda Chair, designed by visionary Italian designer Joe Colombo for Comfort in the 1960s, is an unparalleled icon of mid-century modern design. Named after Colombo’s wife, this revolutionary piece redefined comfort and style with its sculptural form and futuristic aesthetic. With its distinctive fiberglass shell and luxurious cognac leather upholstery, the Elda Chair effortlessly blends innovation with elegance. This particular example, in original cognac leather, retains the bold and ergonomic cushioning that makes it as comfortable as it is visually striking. The leather showcases some age-related wear, adding a unique patina that underscores its authenticity and history as a cherished collector’s piece. The fiberglass shell, known for its durability and timeless appeal, encapsulates the user in a cocoon of comfort, while the swiveling base allows for flexibility and functionality. Highly sought after by collectors and design connoisseurs, the Elda Chair epitomizes Colombo’s avant-garde approach to furniture design. Perfect as a standalone centerpiece in a living room, office, or collector’s showroom, this chair is a rare find that embodies the essence of Italian modernism. Don’t miss the opportunity to own a true masterpiece of design history, a piece that transcends time and continues to captivate.

NEW Elda Chair by Joe Colombo for Longhi, Italy
By Joe Colombo, Longhi
Located in Alsdorf, NW
In 1964, Joe Colombo designed the Elda fibreglass armchair for Comfort - it has been produced unchanged in Italy ever since. We have currently Elda chairs in stock. They are immediately available. They come with original certificate and box. Elda was the first armchair to have a self-supporting plastic frame. That's why the design classic can be found in many important design collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York or the Louvre in Paris. Elda is rotatable thanks to an integrated ball bearing, seven sausage-like leather upholstered cushions ensure maximum seating comfort. The fibreglass shell is optionally available in white or black, the typical sausage-like leather upholstery as standard in seven different leather colours. Joe Colombo was one of the most innovative designers of the 1960s. His designs were based on the theory that conventional furniture would soon be over - a thought that Le Corbusier also had. He consistently implemented his visions in many furniture and lighting designs or in 1969 during the Visiona exhibition of Bayer AG...
