About the Item

Designers Carlo Hauner (1927-1997) and Martin Eisler (1913-1977) founded the influential Brazilian furniture company Forma in 1953. Focused on industrial processes, their work uses Brazilian woods, thin tubular frames, and a wide range of offerings from furniture to textiles and ceramics. Hauner and Eisler greatly contributed to the rise of Brazilian modernism with their innovative modes of production. The Andorinha armchairs by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, designed in the 1950s, embody a more enveloping and sculptural approach compared to the previous lounge chairs. These armchairs have a high, gently contoured back that offers a sense of comfort and elegance. Their form is soft and rounded, with flowing lines that evoke the shape of a swallow in flight, which is fitting given that Andorinha means "swallow" in Portuguese. Upholstered in a light, textured fabric, they offer both visual warmth and tactile appeal. The seat cushions are loose and well-padded, while the backrests are slightly tufted for subtle detail and additional support. The base is constructed from slender black metal legs with a distinctive cross-brace structure, giving the chairs a sense of lightness while maintaining stability. This metal underframe contrasts elegantly with the plush body of the chairs, showcasing the duo’s talent for blending industrial materials with organic forms.
