About the Item

Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler founded the influential Brazilian design studio Forma in the 1950s. Hauner and Eisler were among many European designers who moved to South America during this time when fresh materials and new processes were being introduced into the commercial market. These Reversible Armchair demonstrate the central tenets of their modernist design philosophy, characterised by thin tubular frames juxtaposed against a clean upholstered finish. The matching curves of the two components combine the minimalism of European modernism with the sensual forms of Brazilian design. The chairs feature a sculptural, almost whimsical form, with a sinuous seat and a floating backrest, both upholstered in Loro Piana’s Connemara Biancore fabric—a soft, refined textile that adds a tactile richness to the minimalist design. The slender black iron frame supports the organic shapes with a striking visual lightness, its delicate legs meeting in angular lines and ending with brass-capped feet that subtly elevate the design. What makes these armchairs particularly fascinating is the concept behind them: they are reversible, meaning the position of the seat and backrest can be switched or reoriented. This reflects the designers’ playful approach to form and function, inviting the user to interact with the object. Today this piece is among the most recognisable designs by Hauner and Eisler and a symbol of mid-century modernism.
