1980ies Palace chair designed by George Sowden for Memphis Milano

About the Item

1980ies Memphis Milano Palace chair in colored lacquered wood designed by George Sowden, 1983. George Sowden studied architecture at Gloucestershire College of Art in the 1960ies and moved to Milano in 1970. He worked with Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti and in 1981 he was amongst founders of the Memphis Group. The members of the Memphis group joined to form Memphis Milano, to manufacture and distribute their products that would create objects with a whole new esthetic. Spaces and interiors were now thrilling, colorful, fun and cool. Memphis seemed to blend Popular culture & design history creating a avant-garde ideal for the new work and life surroundings. Also Memphis didn’t become a successful company financially it remains one of the most influential companies in the time ever since - Offering a new approach to altering the every day sphere, and in finding new relations between „high and low“ materials, such as laminate, lacquer, composite wood on the one and luxury veneers, glas etc. on the other hand. In parallel George Sowden founded Sowden Design. In numerous collaborations with famous companies he developed his ideas, albeit he till this day is seen as one of the Memphis designers. For the palace chair he would use laquered wood in blue green black and yellow with strong reminiscence to the English arts and crafts movement, that is present in this chairs design. Also it has no upholstery its geometry offers a pleasant comfort that one might not expect from it’s appearance. This chair is manufactured by Memphis Milano in the late 1980ies and comes from a private estate. It is in good vintage condition appropriate to its age and shows several signs of use, especially in the area of the seat and on its arm rests. We will add further pictures soon !
