Frei Egídio Chair by Lina Bo Bardi , 2022, Marcenaria Baraúna

About the Item

Design:Lina Bo Bardi, Marcelo Ferraz, Marcelo Suzuki Material:Solid Pine This chair was designed by Lina Bo Baldi, Marcelo Ferras, and Marcelo Suzuki for the Teatro Gregório de Mattos in Salvador, Brazil. "Frei Egídio Chair" translates directly to "Father Egídio's Chair." The name was chosen to honor the priest who commissioned Lina to design the chair for the Espírito Santo do Serrado church project in Uberlandia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1982. The chair is said to have been modeled after the Italian Renaissance folding chairs used in the creation of Lina's masterpiece, "The Glass House," and the emphasis was on light weight and easy portability. The design was radical for a folding chair of its time. Ferras and Suzuki were in charge of selecting the wood and hardware. They completed the chair by simultaneously designing and manufacturing. The chair is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
