DESCRIPTION: Mid-Century Poul Kjaerholm "PK-80" Daybed, produced by E. Kold Christensen, circa 1950, Denmark. Rare first edition. Original leather Very decorative piece made with leather and steel. CONDITION: Good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. DIMENSIONS: Height: 31cm (12in) Width: 190cm (75in) Depth: 80cm (31.5in) Seat Height: 31cm (12in) ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) was a Danish designer. Born in Østervrå, Denmark, Kjærholm began his career as a cabinetmaker's apprentice with Gronbech in 1948, attending the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen in 1952. In 1953, he married Hanne Kjærholm who became a successful architect. While working as a designer, he also became an educator continuing studies with Prof. Erik Herløw and Prof. Palle Suenson. ABOUT THE STYLE: Mid-Century Modern (MCM) is a design movement in interior, product, graphic design, architecture, and urban development that was popular from roughly 1945 to 1969, during the post–World War II period. The term was used descriptively as early as the mid-1950s and was defined as a design movement by Cara Greenberg in her 1984 book Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s. It is now recognized by scholars and museums worldwide as a significant design movement. The MCM design aesthetic is modern in style and construction, aligned with the Modernist movement of the period. It is typically characterized by clean, simple lines and honest use of materials, and it generally does not include decorative embellishments.
