Rare Set of 8 Mies van der Rohe for Knoll MR10 and MR20 Chairs
By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Located in Phoenix, AZ
Rare Set of 8 Mies van der Rohe for Knoll MR10 and MR20 Chairs
This exceptional set of eight chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Knoll represents the epitome of modernist design. Comprising six MR10 and twor MR20 chairs, this collection showcases Mies' commitment to simplicity, functionality, and elegance in both form and material.
Style & Usage in Interior Design
These chairs belong to the Bauhaus and International Style, characterized by clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and an emphasis on the use of modern materials. The MR10 chairs are armless, offering a sleek and unobtrusive silhouette perfect for dining or office spaces where a minimalist aesthetic is desired. The MR20 chairs, featuring a distinctive curved armrest, provide additional comfort and a more commanding presence, making them ideal as statement pieces in living rooms, lounges, or reading nooks.
In interior design, these chairs are best used in spaces that celebrate the beauty of industrial materials like steel and leather. They complement open-plan layouts, where their airy structure can be fully appreciated, and they pair well with other iconic mid-century modern pieces.
Key Differences: MR10 vs. MR20
MR10 Chairs: Armless design, characterized by a continuous steel frame that supports the seat and back. Their simplicity allows them to fit seamlessly into various spaces, from dining rooms to offices.
MR20 Chairs: Include curved armrests, adding both aesthetic and functional value. These chairs provide more support and comfort, making them suitable for longer periods of sitting or as standalone accent pieces.
Mies van der Rohe: A Brief History
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, born in Germany in 1886, was a pioneering figure in modern architecture and design. He began his career in his family's stone-carving business, later studying architecture and working under the influential architect Peter Behrens. Mies was a leading member of the Bauhaus movement, which emphasized the integration of art, craft, and technology.
In 1938, Mies emigrated to the United States, where he became the head of the architecture school at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). His work in America solidified his reputation as one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.
Architectural Legacy
Mies van der Rohe's architectural philosophy is encapsulated in his famous dictum, "Less is more." His buildings are renowned for their clarity of form, open spaces, and use of modern materials such as glass and steel. His approach sought to create structures that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing, stripping away unnecessary ornamentation to reveal the essence of the design.
Notable Works:
The Barcelona Pavilion (1929): A masterwork of modern architecture, showcasing Mies' minimalist approach with its flowing spaces and use of glass, marble, and steel.
The Farnsworth House (1951): An iconic example of his philosophy, this glass and steel structure is celebrated for its simplicity and seamless integration with the surrounding landscape.
The Seagram Building (1958): Located in New York City, this skyscraper is a landmark of the International Style, known for its clean lines, bronze facade, and innovative use of space.

4 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Mr10 Dining Chairs 1960s Knoll International
By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Located in London, GB
Complete set of four chrome cantilever MR10 chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in brown leather. This set of chairs is an early 1960s example of his famous design produced by Knoll International. The MR10 chair was first designed in the 1920s, and this set of four features the chrome springs on the backs and seats. Later the design was improved, with a shortening of the springs and a reversion to an elastic corset cord. The chairs still bear the oval sticker marks on the back of the bottom of the seats.
MR10 chairs are really comfortable, and are a real design Classic, as seen in many films and other media. Our MR10 chairs recently have been used to decorate the interior of a restaurant in London, which was featured in Architectural Digest, Dezeen, Elle Decoration, and many other publications (as shown in the images, which are property of Child Studio...

1st-Gen Knoll Barcelona Lounge Set by Mies Van Der Rohe, c. 1968, Double-Signed
By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich, Knoll

What is special about this set is that it was produced between 1968 and 1969 just after Knoll Associates became Knoll International, at the height of their ascent in modern designs and production and just before they moved to their future location on Fifth Ave in 1970. Shortly after this period they changed production on the Barcelona line thus making these rare collectors examples from the end of Knoll's 1st Generation production run of the Barcelona series and for collectors, often the most desirable.

1st-Gen Knoll 'Barcelona' Stool by Mies Van Der Rohe, c. 1968, Double-Signed
By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich, Knoll
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A fantastic collectors example of a double-signed 1st-Generation "original" Barcelona stool / ottoman by Knoll International labelled (on the cushion) and stamped (on the frame) and in its original gorgeous cognac brown color leather. What is special about this piece is that it was produced between 1968 and 1969 just after Knoll Associates became Knoll International, at the height of their ascent in modern designs and production and just before they moved to their future location on Fifth Ave in 1970. Shortly after this period they changed production on the Barcelona line thus making these rare collectors examples from the end of Knoll's 1st Generation production run of the Barcelona series and for collectors, often the most desirable.
*Note, we have a pair of Barcelona Chairs with two ottomans in another listing. We acquired this set from the daughter of the original owner who had two chairs and three ottomans. This listing is only for the single ottoman. See our other listings or contact us if you wish to purchase as a combined set.
Being one of the most copied designs (and a timeless classic), we never purchase unsigned Barcelona chairs and we suggest you be hesitant when considering unsigned examples, so of course we were delighted to acquire this fantastic set of signed originals. In addition - people often add Knoll stickers to fakes, so the entirety of details is vastly more important than just a sticker label alone. This stool / ottoman possess its original Knoll International paper label stitched into the cushion with the 320 Park Ave New York address. We have confirmed these paper labels have not been removed and reattached via the stitching which is a great sign that the leather and underside canvas are original. And the frame has the Knoll Production KP-stamp which Knoll used in their early years to identify their stainless steel frames. The correct strap fasteners are apparent indicating they have not been replaced. The leather straps exhibit correct age and via its details we have determined the straps are original as well. And even the foam inside of the cushions are original - there is slight firmness and hardening to them which is actually a good thing, it shows that it is original which collectors prefer. All in all, this is a fabulous all-original double-signed example with original frame, original straps and hardware, original leather cushions, original inner foam, and original canvas fabric on the undersides of the seat cushion. Collectors and art/design investors... eat your hearts out.
With this early 1st Gen example you'll feel pride in that you have the "real thing", and rare early production examples to boot, while your friends boast either a knock-off, reproduction or brand-new production-line versions which do not have the collectability value as the earlier originals such as this one - you can feel pride in having one of the most desirable examples out there.
Considered to be the epitome of modern design, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich originally designed the Barcelona chair in 1929 to serve as seating for the king and queen of Spain in the German Pavilion. This was Germany's entry for the International Exhibition, hosted by Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The frames were made with polished chrome hand-ground and hand-buffed to a mirror finish with leather upholstery straps attached with aluminum rivets. The upholstery is fabricated from a single cowhide with each individual panel being cut, hand-welted and hand tufted with leather buttons.
Whether you're a designer seeking a quintessential piece or a collector adding to your modern design collection, this iconic Knoll International Barcelona...

Pair of EKC Kjaerholm PK-22's and Knoll Associates Barcelona Chair and Ottoman
By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Knoll, Lilly Reich
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This listing is for two PK-22 lounge chairs and a Barcelona lounge chair and ottoman.
About the Barcelona chair and ottoman:
A highly sought-after-by-collectors 'Original 1st Generation Production' set of Knoll Associates (signed) Barcelona chair and ottoman by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, circa 1961, in original black leather and matching original leather straps.
Being one of the most copied designs (and a timeless Classic), we never purchase unsigned Barcelona chairs and we suggest you be hesitant when considering an unsigned set, so of course we were delighted to find this signed 1st Generation Knoll Associates Barcelona lounge chair showing the earlier 320 Park Ave address (circa 1961) on the original cushion labels and Knoll Associates strap label. These are fine collectors examples prime for the most discriminating collector or interior designer client.
These examples have a nice light patina to the black leather cushions which exhibit a lightly distressed look to some areas. Very beautiful for those who love the look of aged leather. No rips or tears and wear is stable. Usable for every day chairs for many more years to come.
With these early examples of the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Knoll Associates Barcelona lounge chairs and ottomans, you'll feel pride in that you have the "real thing", and rare signed 1st Generation examples to boot... while your friends boast either a knock-off, reproduction or brand-new production-line versions which do not have the collectability value as the earlier originals such as this one.
Often, sellers will state their Barcelona chairs are by Knoll and often even state they are earlier productions (1960s and 1970s)... If they do not have Knoll Associates or Knoll International labels you should be very cautious of their claim. If they have a Knoll repeat pattern under the cushion or Knoll Studio stamps on the frame it means they are by Knoll but are the recent production versions and not the early originals and lack the collectibility and long term value as these. Without any labels or frame stamps, be very cautious as it could be a fake, even if the seller is trying to claim it is real. With the number of fakes out there, there really is no point in buying unmarked examples. This set has the correct hardware and other construction details along with labels which help to demonstrate authenticity.
These Knoll Associates Barcelona lounge chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an Apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as side chairs, dining, cafe or breakfast table chairs, bedside chairs, fireside chairs, dressing or changing room chairs, hallway chairs, entryway or mudroom chairs, nursing or reading chairs, conference room chairs, office or desk chairs, guest chairs, lobby chairs, lounge chairs or occasional chairs ideal...
