Pair of Frank Gehry Side Chairs in corrugated cardboard Vitra - USA 1972

About the Item

Frank Gehry, the ‘gratuitously eccentric’ architect behind the Guggenheim Bilbao gained attention in the 1970s with his ‘Easy Edges’ furniture series (1969-73). Constructed in corrugated cardboard and fibreboard, the line’s most emblematic designs include the Body Contour Rocker (1971) and Easy Edges Side Chair (1970). It is possible Gehry’s interest in found and everyday materials was inspired by a childhood making cities out of scrap wood-chippings with his Grandma and a short spell designing chairs for army soldiers. He made his Santa Monica home, a deconstructivist work of art, from plywood, corrugated metal and chain-link fence. Now out of production, the ‘Side Chair’ was designed in 1972 and produced by Vitra in 2002. It is elementary but distinctive, proportionate and speaks a language of fun utilitarianism – yet it is also very strong and durable. Four chairs available in original box and packaging. In pristine condition with no visible wear or marks. H82 W36 D50cm
