About the Item

Marco Zanuso "Square" Living Room Set for Arflex, camel velvet, Italy, 1962. The design of Marco Zanuso's "Square" sofa, produced for Arflex in 1960s, reflects his commitment to modernist design and innovation. The sofa, restored and reupholstered in the natural tones of beige with a dark brown decorative cord on the cushions and armrests, showcases a high, comfortable backrest that evokes the classic club style, combining formal elegance with functional comfort. The legs, crafted from turned dark wood and enameled black metal, create a balanced structure that supports the minimalist form. Zanuso, known for his collaborations with Arflex and experimentation with new materials, approached this project with his signature focus on ergonomics and industrial production techniques. The "Square" series highlights his ability to blend sculptural aesthetics with everyday usability, a hallmark of his work from the 1960s. His design philosophy, which aimed to enhance both comfort and durability, is evident in the sofa's clean lines and resilient structure. Our atelier offers custom restoration and special reupholstering on request. Contact us to create the object you desire.

Percival Lafer “MP-41” Living Room Set for Lafer MP, 1972, Set of 3
By Percival Lafer
Located in Lonigo, Veneto
Percival Lafer “MP-41” living room set for Lafer MP, wood and cognac leather, Brazil, 1972, set of 3 The “MP-41” living room set by Percival Lafer, composed of a sofa and two armchairs, embraces fluidity with a structure that appears weightless despite its solid rosewood frame. The absence of visible crossbars beneath the seat enhances this effect, allowing the thick, tufted cushions to seemingly float. The upholstery drapes over the structure like silk fabric on a sculpted form, a harmonious integration of material and frame. The butterfly-shaped joints refine the frame’s construction, tapering toward the center for a softened profile. The lateral tufting on the seat is not merely decorative—it creates a structured geometry that follows the contours of the body. The armrests, backrest, and seat merge into a single, uninterrupted form, maximizing ergonomic support. Leather straps secure the cushions to the frame, a signature Lafer detail that blends artisanal technique with industrial efficiency. The MP-41 prioritizes organic curves over strict geometric lines. The deep cognac leather, aged to a rich patina, enhances the warmth of the rosewood. The absence of ornamentation shifts focus to the raw materials, celebrating their natural textures and variations. Unlike Jean Gillon’s “Tijuca...

Florence Knoll Bassett (born May 24, 1917) is an American architect and furniture designer who studied under Mies van der Rohe and Eliel Saarinen. She was born Florence Schust. In 1938, Hans Knoll founded his furniture company by that name in New York. In 1943, Florence Schust convinced Hans she could help bring in business to his company even in America’s wartime economy by expanding into interior design by working with architects. With her architectural background and design flair, she succeeded. They married in 1946, she became a full business partner and together they founded Knoll Associates. A new furniture factory was established in Pennsylvania and dealers in Knoll’s furniture were carefully added over the next several years. Florence Knoll felt architects should contribute their design ability to furniture as well. Some of these furniture designs would become design icons of the 20th century and have remained in the Knoll line for decades due to their timeless design. When Hans Knoll died in a car accident in 1955, Florence Knoll took over operation of the company. Florence Knoll herself designed chairs, sofas, tables and casegoods during the 1950s, many of which remain in the Knoll line to this day. In 1958 she married Harry Hood Bassett. Her American interpretation of Minimalist, rationalist design theories is clearly evident in Knoll’s storage pieces. She mixed woods and metals to great effect and added laminates as they became popular. Dressers and desks are all square in design but never lack for quality. Hanging cabinets have glass shelves, sliding doors and drop down fronts that can be used as bars. As an architect, Knoll’s most famous creations are the Connecticut General Life...
