Vincent Cafiero Executive Task Chair in Graphite Gray Velvet by Knoll

About the Item

While under the direction of Florence Knoll, her namesake company was known for more than just the impressive portfolio of designs still celebrated to this day. Knoll’s teams of talented designers, the best in their respective categories, were tasked with a multitude of duties such as comprehensive interiors in the “Planning Unit” where Vincent Cafiero worked as a Senior Designer. One project Cafiero would work on was the famed CBS interior of 1965. His time after the “Planning Unit” was focused designing Knoll’s own showrooms. Cafiero also designed a small collection of furniture during his time at Knoll which responded to the designs of his time. Whereas organic “bucket” forms were ubiquitous, Cafiero opted to introduce a clean-lined minimalist approach to Executive seating. One piece from his collection is this Executive Task Chair which very much inherited Knoll’s design DNA with formal blind tufts and definitive geometry. Cafiero’s superior in quality designs have since been discontinued making them highly sought after amongst discerning collectors. Our team brought this piece right down to its frame for a full restoration. The new upholstery re-implements Cafiero’s intentional design details such as the careful use of piping and a grid of blind tufts on both the back and seat. The original stainless steel base is not only a discontinued Knoll design, but it’s 5-leg layout is far less seen than Knoll’s 4-leg design of the time. The base, which has minor wear consistent with age and history, is equipped with both tilt and manual height adjustment for optimal comfort.

Otto Zapf Executive Chairs in Original Saddle Brown Leather by Knoll
By Otto Zapf, Knoll
Located in Stamford, CT
Otto Zapf, a distinguished German product designer, embarked on his career in his homeland, driven by an enduring passion for flexibility and human-centered design. By the time he joined forces with Knoll in 1973, Zapf was already an accomplished designer, and his transition was as seamless as the furniture he would go on to create for the iconic brand. Marrying a distinctly German design philosophy centered on systems with a deep commitment to humanism and ease of use, Zapf crafted pieces that were as functional as they were inviting. His Softline System, a modular office storage suite, epitomized this approach by combining rigid frames with soft, attachable fabric surfaces. This design ethos found further expression in his Executive Seating Collection, where soft, upholstered pads mounted onto spring steel frames resulted in a creation unmistakably true to Zapf’s vision. Zapf's commitment to "friendly design" is evident in every aspect of his Executive Seating Collection. He masterfully balanced the demands of comfort and ergonomics, crafting a chair that not only looks inviting but also offers unparalleled functionality—a hallmark of Knoll’s design philosophy. The innovative cushion system, a key feature of this chair, reflects Zapf's dedication to adaptability and ease of maintenance. Each of the five independent cushions can be effortlessly removed for repair or replacement, ensuring the chair’s longevity. The back cushions glide smoothly along dual rails of spring steel, adjusting to the user's preferred reclining position with natural ease. The result is a chair that not only welcomes but also adapts to the user, embodying the very essence of Zapf's design principles. This particular chair is no longer in production, making it highly sought after, especially when presented in the timeless Saddle Brown leather as shown. We currently have six of Otto Zapf’s Executive Chairs...

Eames Soft-Pad Executive Chairs in Smoke Gray Leather by Herman Miller
By Charles and Ray Eames
Located in Stamford, CT
The great portfolio of Charles & Ray Eames is widely celebrated and serves as a model of inspiration for designers to this day. One of their most recognizable designs is the Aluminum Group line for Herman Miller from which these Soft Pad Executive Chairs were born. It is said that the Soft Pad variation was a design accident - cushions from the Eames Chaise found themselves draped over an Aluminum Group chair, and the rest is history. Whatever the story may be, the comfort of Charles & Ray’s Soft Pad seating perhaps rivals that of their famed Eames Lounge Chair. The Soft Pad collection consists of a Lounge Chair, a Low Back Management Chair, and this High Back Executive Chair. The design language is similar to the Eames Aluminum Group suite which sports a single “sling” of material which is tethered to two cast aluminum side rails and in this case, four plush cushions for optimal comfort. These chairs are equipped with a tilt mechanism with tension control as well as manual height adjustment. We have a large quantity of these Eames Soft Pad Executive Chairs...
