Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn 'Liljevalchs' Sofa in Green Fabric

About the Item

Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, Sofa Nr. 345, fabric, beech, Sweden, design 1934, later production This spacious and extremely comfortable sofa is designed by Austrian architect and designer Josef Frank. The seat of this sofa is very wide and is perfect for lounging or reading. The whole sofa is upholstered in a green fabric. The seat is upholstered and the back cushions that provide support for the seater are placed loose in the sofa. The sofa is resting on four cylindrical beech legs. Josef Frank (1885-1967) was an Austrian architect. He studied architecture at the Kunstgewerbeschule. He started out by designing public housing and social architecture. Although at the beginning of his career he was one of the frontrunners of the Vienna modern school, he soon turned away from the modernist, purist dogmas and instead pursued a more free, creative and human style ideal. He developed his own path of modernism in which a sense of home, vibrant colors and comfortable usage were at the core. Frank was already 50 years old when he fled Nazi Germany for Sweden. Here, he started to collaborate with Svenskt Tenn and designed fabrics and furniture amongst other and became one of the leading designers in Sweden. Please note that the item is in good, used condition. It shows traces of wear and use on the fabric.
