About the Item

Florence Knoll’s enduring impact on Mid-Century Modern design is unmistakably reflected in this monumental, custom-designed dining table. A pioneering figure in interior architecture, Knoll founded the influential “Planning Unit,” reshaping both corporate and residential spaces for clients such as IBM and CBS. Her dedication to functional elegance defined a generation of design, resulting in an iconic collection of furniture—sofas, lounge chairs, tables, desks, and credenzas—each a testament to her modernist philosophy. This exceptional table comes from a complete suite of custom-ordered Knoll pieces, acquired from the estate of the original owners. Commissioned directly through Knoll, the table exemplifies a sculptural sensibility reminiscent of Warren Platner’s humanist aesthetic. There are no right angles in the design—only a continuous, sweeping radius that defines the tabletop and flows seamlessly into each chrome leg. Measuring an impressive 90 inches long by 52 inches deep, this table comfortably accommodates a large gathering while maintaining a refined presence. The legs are crafted from heavy-gauge steel, chrome-plated with precision, and attach to a hidden internal steel frame. That same structural frame subtly emerges as an inset detail around the tabletop’s perimeter, adding an understated design accent. The piece remains in original vintage condition, exhibiting only minor wear consistent with age. A factory-provided fifth leg is included for optional support and can be easily attached or removed. Also available is a matching custom Knoll credenza, offering a harmonious companion piece to complete the setting.

Custom Jens Risom for Knoll 78x48 inch Oval Walnut Dining / Conference Table
By Jens Risom, Knoll
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Listed for sale is an original early 2000's custom ordered Jens Risom walnut dining / conference table. The table was produced by Knoll International and is in very nice condition. The tables were ordered by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Architects (SOM) for the Pritzker family's Hyatt Headquarters during a large-scale re-design of their corporate headquarters in Chicago. When purchasing these tables, I reached out to a historian at Knoll to ask about the history of the tables. They were part of the "Knoll Planning Unit" design series, which can be noted by the design of these sculpted legs. Photos are attached. In short, the design makes use of four sculpted legs adopted from the Planning Unit (a design from the late 50's/early 60's) with a top designed and dimensioned identically to the Florence Knoll oval 78 inch tables and Saarinen oval tulip tables...
