Biography:
Betsy Lewis Napangardi was a traditional Warlpiri woman from the Yuendumu Community region. Betsy was born in the bush just west of Yuendumu in the 1940’s, this was before hospitals and health clinics were available and accessible in the area. Betsy moved to Mount Doreen Station with her family at a young age. She was raised by Paddy Japanangka Lewis and attended the Yuendumu School. She spent her life living in Yuendumu.
Betsy began painting full time in 1999 however she had been painting for Warlukurlangu Artists for some time before then. She was considered at the forefront of the move towards more abstract depictions of Aboriginal art however did maintain a strong connection to her Kurruwarri heritage. Her art is bright and textured with thick layers of paint. Some of her family members are also artists such as Margaret Lewis.
Betsy is known best for five Dreamtime depictions - Snake Vine, Women’s Dreaming, Edible Fungus, Dreaming Site and Dogwood. The story of Jintiparnta is of the Napangardi and Napanangka women who collect Jintiparnta or Edible Fungus at Karnakarlangu. The area is also known as Mina Mina. The ancestral women would travel from here heading north and east toward Janyinki and Alcoota country. He is the author of 4 books and his articles and interviews have been published nationally and internationally. About his work, 3 books have been published. He has received l37 awards in various events, among which is the National Order for his contribution to culture, conferred by the Council of State of Cuba. He has received three Honoris Causa Doctorates: from the International University Foundation, Delaware and from the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí; likewise, he is Honoray Doctor in Letters from the International Biographical Center, Cambridge. He has participated as a jury in I2I national and international events.
He is included in yearbooks, dictionaries and encyclopedias such as, among others: Incursions into Cuban Engraving, Havana; Cuban Art of the 20th Century, Los Angeles; Annuaire de L’Art International, Paris; Dictionary of Plastic Arts, Havana; Personaggi Contemporanei, Milan; Who's Who in Graphic Arts, Zürich; International Profiles, Cambridge; Allgemeines Kunstler-Lexicon, Berlin; Personalities of the World, Raleigh; Who's Who in Art, London; Who’s Who in American Art, New York; Dizionario del Grafico, Milan; Who’s Who in the World, New York and the Encyclopedie de L’Affiche, Paris.

'Calibrated to Balance' is a unique red, green, yellow, teal and amber hand-blown and cut glass hanging artwork with steel frame by the American and Swiss artists, Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg.
Exquisitely handblown and cut to the highest quality and refinement, the elements have been composed and suspended on a steel frame ready for wall hanging. Increasingly the artists have become more sculptural in focus, while seeking to imbue their work with a deep connection to archetypal forms and shapes, and striving for the highest level of craftsmanship. They address eternal symbols of human culture and history, primarily through blown glass, but also using steel, and constructions in other materials.
Baldwin (1947, New York) and Guggisberg (1955, Bern) have been a collaborative team for over forty years. They share an instinctive appreciation for the subtle blending of art and design, functionality and abstract expression, combined with a love of material – especially glass.
The list of museums and collections which have acquired their works is long and impressive. Individual showings, as well as participation in group shows, have given them opportunities to present their works at leading galleries and in major museums in Europe, Japan and the United States and their works rank among the best to be found in the international glass art scene. Working freelance, they have also designed successful products for international glass manufacturers since 1985. Their clients have included renowned firms like Rosenthal, Steuben, Corning and Venini.
Over time their work has developed its own distinctive signature, based in Italian cold-working (battuto) combined with the Swedish overlay process for layering colours. They have been pioneers in adapting these techniques and in creating a distinct expression of their own. Colour, light, texture, pattern, and shape together reveal an undercurrent of meaning and value, adhering to the simplest of forms and clear lines.
Over the years they have become more sculptural in focus, while seeking to imbue their work with a deep connection to archetypal forms and shapes, and striving for the highest level of craftsmanship. They address eternal symbols of human culture and history, while embracing contemporary evolution in form and meaning.
