James Strombotne Furniture

American, b. 1934

Whether he’s depicting a rocky cliff amid a calm sea, a pop culture moment or a vase of daisies atop a kitchen table, artist James Strombotne creates subdued, stylized images that feature rich color pairings and brim with life.

Born in Watertown, South Dakota, Strombotne grew up in Southern California. In 1956, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College. He then went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts from the Claremont Graduate School in 1959. He also received a fellowship from Pomona College to study abroad in Italy. In 1962, the Guggenheim Foundation awarded him a fellowship to continue his international studies in Rome.

Strombotne had his first solo show in 1956 at the Studio 44 gallery in San Francisco. Over the course of his career, he had more than 75 solo exhibitions and a dozen retrospectives across the United States.

In the 1970s, Strombotne began teaching art at the University of California in Riverside. He continued to paint and exhibit throughout his teaching years. He taught at the same school for 40 years until his retirement in 2005.

Strombotne’s work is held in many public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He lives in Orange County, California, where he keeps a studio and continues to create art.

James C. Borden Large Cityscape Street Scene Watercolor Painting Cerused Frame
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Absolutely masterful watercolor street scene painting by James C. Borden (1928-2013). Prepare to be awestruck when you lay eyes on this exquisitely detailed watercolor painting by James Borden. The modern painting depicts an ethereal urban scene crowned with summer light. The scale itself is impressive at over four feet wide and three feet high (50.75? x 36.675?). There is just so much to see, so much texture, so many layers. Borden has truly mastered his medium. This is a watercolor cityscape on paper, housed in a cerused wood frame and protected by a pane of acrylic. The painting’s vibrant colors have beautifully preserved. The mastery of this painting is unreal. Borden’s orchestration of color leads the eye through the painting with late afternoon sunlight carving a path through an otherwise gray urban interior. His use of color is narrative. The viewer is being teased away from gloomy city life with a glimmer of sun and nature on the horizon. The nuance in his layering, through elevated passages of transparency… simply brilliant. Be sure to spend time with this painting. There is more to see each and every time you look. Did you notice the Easter egg? Borden used his name as the sign on one of the buildings on the left. The painting is pencil signed “Jim Borden.” James C. Borden studied at the School of the American Academy of Art in Chicago and was a life long painter. Mr. Borden spent much of his life in South Bend...
