Important Baroque painting attributable to the hand of the great Roman old master Giacinto Brandi. It depicts San Giovannino who, with an expression of rare beauty and intensity, turns his gaze toward us who observe this small masterpiece. Giacinto Brandi (1621 – 19 January 1691) was an Italian painter from the Baroque era, active mainly in Rome and Naples. Born in Rome,he was part of the studio of Alessandro Algardi, a noted sculptor who noted that Brandi was more suited to painting. He joined the studio of Giovanni Giacomo Sementi. He traveled to Naples from 1638, and by 1647 had returned to Rome to work under Giovanni Lanfranco, where Brandi befriended Mattia Preti. The two artists would later on, often collaborate. His works are well distributed among baroque Churches of Rome including San Carlo al Corso ceiling frescoes (1670–1671), San Silvestro in Capite, Sant'Andrea al Quirinale, a canvas of Sant'Andrea (1650) in Santa Maria in Via Lata a painting of Martyrdom of the Forty (1660) for the Chiesa delle Santissima Stimmate di San Francesco a Coronation of the Virgin (1680) which serves as main altarpiece for the church of Gesù e Maria, a canvas of the Drunkedness of Noah in the Galleria Corsini, an Assumption (1655) for Santa Maria in Organo in Verona a fresco from Ovid's Metamorphoses (1651–1653) for Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona, and a Martyrdom of San Biagio for the church of San Carlo ai Catinari a Visione del beato Giovanni di San Facondo (1656) and a Estasi della beata Rita da Cascia (1660) in the Basilica di Sant'Agostino in Campo Marzio San Rocco intercede per i malati di peste (1673) and San Rocco in gloria (1674) in the Chiesa di San Rocco all'Augusteo; Compianto sul Cristo morto (1675–76) in the Chiesa di Sant'Andrea al Quirinale. A large and beautiful three quarter length portrait of a partly seated lady her hat over one arm holding a bouquet of flowers, the other arm held upward holding a branch of a tree. This original oil on canvas by the British artist Laurence Koe, (1863-1913), is signed on the lower right and dated 1905.
Lawrence E. Koe was a portrait painter and sculptor. He is listed as living in Brighton when he first exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1891, but by 1894 he had moved to London where he appears to have settled for the remainder of his life. Koe exhibited widely; over twenty times at The Royal Academy, but also at the R.O.I, The Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Most of his exhibited works were portraits, and among his sitters were the wives of fellow artists Harold Speed RP (1872-1957) and Harold Piffard (fl. 1895-1899). In 1896 Koe exhibited “Venus and Tännhauser” at the Royal Academy, now in the permanent collection in the Brighton Museum and Art and he showed a painting of Sappho two years later. He clearly shows the influence of other artists working at the same time, notably Singer Sargent, Arthur Hacker RA (1858-1919) and Herbert James Draper...

Gianfranco Asveri was born in Fiorenzuola D’Arda, Italy, in 1948. The artist lives and works at Gasperini on the hills between Parma and Piacenza with his beloved dogs.
He began to paint in 1969. His first work was merely figurative. In the 1980s he moved closer to the “Art Brut” style.
Renowned in Italy, Asveri has just finished a solo exhibition in Genoa at the Medioeval “Commenda” and will be presented in Paris next February during the Contemporary Art Fair in Port de Versailles.
Recently, the newspaper “Il Sole 24 Ore” (The Italian Economic newspaper) included Asveri among the artists to watch in terms of investment in the Italian Art Market.
An appreciable number of famous critics have written essays about his works: Paolo Bledinger, Luca Beatrice, Flaminio Gualdoni and Martina Corgnati.

Set in a carved gilt frame, the large artwork depicts a pastoral scene with the port of Marseilles in the background; it features people playing cards around a table, one lady napping with a dog beside her, another woman with her kid carrying flowers, a man courting a young beauty sitting on a bench, and horses in movement. The inscription on the rider's flag reads "Liberte de L'Escaut 1793," likely referring to the Battle of Raismes (also known as the Battle of Conde or St. Amand) which took place on 8 May 1793, during the Flanders Campaign of the Wars of the French Revolution. It was between the French Republican army and the Allied Coalition army, and resulted in an Allied Victory. A possible signature is not legible in the lower left corner of painting.
