Interestingly in 1861, he was a visitor, aged 11, at the home of his future wife Emily Elizabeth Dickman, aged 8, who he married in 1883. Judging by their names, they were probably cousins. He lived in Manchester for 3 years between 1879 and 1881, but by 1891, he and his wife had moved to Egham in Surrey, with their daughter Emily Muriel Russell Bastin and one servant. By 1911, they were living in a 10 roomed house in Downview Road, West Worthing in Sussex with two servants and his spinster sister, where he died in 1913. He was a painter of genre in oils and watercolours and obviously made a comfortable living. He exhibited from 1871-1907 in London and the provinces, including 1 at the Royal Academy, 13 at the Birmingham City Art Gallery, 10 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 3 at the Royal Society of British Artists and 1 at Manchester City Art Gallery and 1 at the Royal Oil Painters Institute. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.
