Georgian Earrings

GEORGIAN STYLE

Georgian jewelry is named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). A slew of beautiful pieces were produced during the period, and today antique Georgian rings, necklaces and other accessories are coveted by fine jewelry collectors.

There are certain features that distinguish jewelry from this era, including the fact that pieces from the 18th and early 19th centuries were handmade (so don’t let the absence of a maker’s mark lead you to believe otherwise). Antique Georgian jewelry also has a certain “look.” It’s a bit gray because stones were often set in silver, and because stonecutting techniques were not as advanced as they are today, the gems do not possess the level of sparkle to which we have become accustomed.

Intricate metalworking techniques such as repoussé (the hammering of metal into ornate designs) and cannetille (a method of working the gold wire to make it look woven) allowed goldsmiths to really flex their muscles. These gold pieces, either on their own or combined with gemstones, made for highly original and dramatic jewelry. The era also saw pieces with ornately woven strands of human hair.

Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. These were often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. It was fashionable to combine garnets or rubies with seed pearls. In Georgian diamond rings, popular cuts for diamonds included rose, old mine and table. Around the 1780s, paste jewelry, or hand-cut glass on foil, was used to imitate diamonds.

Located in Narberth, PA
A magnificent pair of Day-to-Night earrings from the Georgian (ca1750s) era! Crafted in 15kt yellow gold and topped in sterling silver, these incredible earrings begin with an elegant floral cluster of 9 Rose Cut diamonds in patinaed collet settings. The cluster secures to the ear with hinged European back-to-front wires, one hand marked with “40". An elegant chandelier of Rose Cut diamonds can be threaded through the European wires, converting the pair from Day to Night, dangling with lovely movement. A total of twenty-one Rose Cut diamonds adorn the addition. Three tiers of three diamonds dangle from the setting, glittering as they catch the light and beautifully frame the face. The diamonds have a collective approximate total weight of 2.5ctw and are held in open-backed settings, allowing light to dance through, enhancing their sparkle. These exquisite versatile earrings would be a spectacular addition to any Georgian collection! The earrings hang an overall 2” in length including the earring wires. The Rose Cut cluster...

Georgian Berlin Iron and Mirrored Cut Steel Necklace and Earring Set
Located in Narberth, PA
Berlin iron jewelry was produced in Germany by the Berlin Royal Foundry beginning in 1804. Previously, iron jewelry had been worn primarily during periods of mourning due to the dark color of its black lacquer finish. However, it reached a high point of popularity between 1813 and 1830. To fund the War of Liberation against Napolean, citizens were asked to donate their precious gold in exchange for iron jewelry. The Berlin iron jewelry was sometimes inscribed with a portrait of Frederick William III of Prussia, or with the words "Gold gab ich für Eisen" (meaning "I gave gold for iron") or "Für das Wohl des Vaterlands" ("For the welfare of our country/fatherland"). Almost overnight, Berlin iron jewelry became a symbol of patriotism. Its beautiful fabrication and lacy appearance gave it widespread appeal, eventually reaching popularity in numerous European countries. Authentic Berlin iron jewelry is now very rare, and well-preserved pieces have become very collectible! Cut steel jewelry originated in England in the 17th century and subsequently spread throughout Europe, eventually becoming a popular style of jewelry worn by members of high society during the Victorian era. Made of polished faceted steel studs, the pieces were cut by hand and then assembled and riveted onto a metal back. The faceted steel elements give this type of jewelry a subtle, metallic glitter that resembles cut gemstones. Motifs varied from the simple to the sublime, with multiple layers and densely packed studs. The time-consuming process and the artistry required to create cut steel jewelry made it very valuable and highly sought-after during the Victorian age, particularly to wear during the stage of "secondary mourning." Produced up until the turn of the 19th century, antique cut steel jewelry is now highly collectible. An exceptional Berlin iron and cut steel necklace and earring set from the Georgian (ca1804) era! Crafted in fine Berlin ironwork with delicate cut steel studs and mirrored steel plaques throughout, this well-preserved ensemble is an incredible work of art. The ornate necklace adorns various sized iron-backed links topped with mirrored steel plaques, each one connected together by intricate, lacy Berlin ironwork. The largest link rests at the center, and features an oval-shaped mirrored steel plaque on the front that is adorns a raised iron cameo...

Exceptional Georgian Paste Earrings, ex. Lillian Gish
Located in New York, NY
Amazing Georgian paste earrings in the most extraordinary shade of lime green from the early 19th Century. Set in a scalloped 14k gold setting around each stone. Georgian earrings of this quality, scale and color are so incredibly rare. The faceting is exquisite. This pair unfortunately is not perfect. There is a little sliver of glass missing from the top point edge of one of the ear pendants. It is not very noticeable when worn but is visible when closely examined. There is also a chip on oval stone of same earring. The surreal color of the lime green glass paste probably has much to do with the minerals used its manufacture. These are minerals which are obviously no longer used so this color is not replicable. The original fittings have been changed to clips later on. In addition, these come from the collection of actress Lillian Gish...
