When the vineyards are showing off reds and golds during the early months of autumn, I head out to stand in the midst of them at my easel. This painting was done in the Livermore Valley wine country where the charming house nestled amongst the lively vines grabbed my attention. I am drawing the viewer's attention to the house by softening the edges of the painting.
About the Artist
Impressionist Catherine McCargar expresses her deep admiration of nature through landscape paintings of Northern California. While she is well-versed in a range of media, her preferred medium for painting is watercolor. The fluidity of the paint allows her to capture the muted undertones and the fleeting light found in the natural world. While the backgrounds of her paintings are impressionistic, the foregrounds of her paintings are often highly detailed, showcasing her technical mastery over her medium.

The work of Ursula Schneider include pastel drawings, paintings, small-scale sculptural paintings and woodcuts, working on one medium at a time. These processes complement and enrich each other by stimulating a fresh approach and allowing for experimentation. Drawing from observation in the landscape has been the basis for the work.
She attended Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and Keramische Fachschule in Bern and holds an Undergraduate Degree in Ceramics from Switzerland.
In 1968 she moved to the United States and graduated in 1972 with an MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute.
She lived and worked in New York from 1980-2004 and taught painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, Cooper Union and Sarah Lawrence College.

After attending City of Oxford High School for Boys, where he excelled at rugby and cricket, he started work as an accountant in the city.
He then moved on to become a steward for the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). In the 1960’s Mr Messer was involved in a car accident which would end his sporting career and change his working life.
When he left his job with BOAC he became a graphic designer at Pergamon Press, owned by Robert Maxwell, which allowed him time to pursue his real passion which was painting watercolours.
He rose through the ranks at Pergamon to become studio manager and when he could progress no further he decided to become a full time artist, a role from which he never retired.
He quickly became well-known for his paintings of Oxford...

About the artist:
Jerry Opper was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 5, 1924. He moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1933. After graduating from Hollywood High School, he worked in movie studios and attended art classes at Chouinard Art Institute. In May 1942, Opper was drafted into the army and was then able to study at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center while his outfit was stationed in Colorado. Later he was sent to Guam and was discharged in December 1945.
Opper returned to Chouinard and his work in movie studios until 1947, when he moved to San Francisco. He enrolled as a full-time student at the California School of Fine Arts (now SFAI) and received his diploma in June of 1950. In 1948, Opper met his wife Gertrud Ruth Friedmann, daughter of artist Gustav Friedmann, whose works are also in the Lost Art Salon collection. It was love at first sight and a few weeks after their first encounter at the Black Cat in San Francisco's North Beach, they got married and enjoyed a passionate, life-long romance.
Shortly after he finished school, Opper worked briefly as a decorator’s assistant and then started his career as a commercial artist, working for several firms such as Fibreboard, Beatrix Food and Precision. Working full-time and dedicating himself to having a rich family life occupied most of Opper's time, but he continued to be creative. He was above all a family man with the pride of having raised two exceptional daughters, Erika and Jody. Year after year, Opper would painstakingly craft their Halloween costumes...

About the artist.
Jean Target was born in France in 1910. From a very young age early on, he was impassioned by the two forms of art that would remain the focal point of his career for all his life: visual arts and performing arts. In the 30s and 40s, as a young man, Jean Target frequented the Parisian theaters and cabarets, just like his role model, the famous impressionist painter Toulouse Lautrec, did at the end of the 19th century. Jean became friends with many performers and captured many formal as well as candid depictions. He gained exclusive access and used this privilege to create art with unparalleled perspective as an insider to the seedy, dark, yet glamorous underworld of Parisian cabaret. He drew the dancers on-site, capturing the dancer’s movements in his immediately recognizable signature style. In the 40s and 50s, he continued his artistic career, gaining recognition among collectors in France and all over Europe. His work depicting the Parisian performing art scene captures the feeling and history of the the theater and golden age of cabaret in Paris. Jean Target continued to draw, paint and sculpt until his death in 1997. The work of Jean Target is held in collections and museums worldwide including the world renowned Victoria And Albert Museum in London.
About the subject.
Serge Golovine, a star of the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas in the 1950's who was considered one of the most brilliant dancers of his generation. As popular as Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov in later years, Mr. Golovine was known for the airborne quality, lightness and virtuosity of his dancing. His best-known roles were the Blue Bird in ''The Sleeping Beauty,'' where the articulation and elegance of his footwork were seen to their best advantage, and the title role of ''Le Spectre de la Rose.'' He was also greatly praised for his poignant portrayal of Petrouchka, which he danced at the Paris Opera in the 1970's. Mr. Golovine was a leading teacher at the ballet school at the Paris Opera from 1981 to 1997. He stood out for the gentleness and quiet wit of his teaching in master classes last summer at the New York University School of Education, where he was a guest professor with his wife, Claude Bessy, the director of the Paris Opera Ballet School. Mr. Golovine, born in Monte Carlo, was one of three siblings who became noted dancers. (His sister, Solange, died several years ago. George Goviloff, a brother, is now the director of the Theatre de la Danse in Avignon.) He began his training in Nice with Julie Sedova, a former Maryinsky dancer, followed by studies with Gustave Ricaux at the Paris Opera. Mr. Golovine made his professional debut at 17 with the Nouveaux Ballets de Monte Carlo, a refuge for dancers reluctant to perform in Paris during the German occupation. He joined the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947 but left in 1950 to join the de Cuevas company. During his years with the troupe, which he left in 1962, Mr. Golovine created the role of Iphias in John Taras's ''Piege de Lumiere.'' His repertory also included the ''Black Swan'' pas de deux from ''Swan Lake,'' ''Les Sylphides'' and the lead male roles in ''Giselle'' and the Bournonville production of ''La Sylphide.'' He effectively retired from the stage in 1964, when he joined the Geneva Ballet as its resident choreographer and ballet master through 1968. Mr. Golovine's best-known ballets were ''Feu Rouge, Feu Vert'' and ''La Mort de Narcisse.'' He was considered an expert in the staging of ballets from the 20th-century Russian repertory. "As a painter, I often work on large, raw canvas. My abstract paintings merge formal painting and “bad” craft to challenge the high-low separation of materials (and related gender hierarchies) that have traditionally been present in the art world. The monotypes are like a calligraphic practice. I use them as a warm up to allow me to feel confident with a gesture before committing it to a larger scale. I work in layers, often sewing or incorporating fabric into the finished piece, and incorporate chance into each stage of my process. The text/titles often come from song lyrics, local radio commercials, and news headlines. I edit these snippets and piece them together to reflect my interpretation of current politics and social norms, especially as they relate to gender.

Vivian Liddell is an interdisciplinary artist in Athens, Georgia who works with painting, fiber and craft techniques, sculpture, printmaking, photography, animation and sound. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, she received her BFA from the University of Georgia and her MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Liddell’s work has been featured in solo and curated exhibitions throughout the United States, including at the Wiregrass Museum of Art, the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences, and Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn. In 2019 she had two solo exhibitions of her “Men” series at the Versa Gallery in Chattanooga and 621 Gallery in Tallahassee, with a review of the Versa exhibition in BURNAWAY and was recently picked by Berlin curator Tina Sauerlaender as a featured artist on Foundwork. Liddell hosts a podcast (Peachy Keen) as an extension of her art practice, interviewing women on art and the South.
