Green Barrier 16 X 16 Oil on Canvas
By Sebastian Spreng
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Oil on canvas Sebastian Spreng, is a Miami-based artist born in Argentina, who at the early age of 17, had his first solo show at a gallery in Buenos Aires which was sold out at opening night. When he moved to Miami in 1987, the excess of sunshine made him change his approach to painting and his career blossomed. Since then, Spreng has participated in solo and group exhibitions from Boston to Seattle to Munich, Essen to Tokyo. His work is inspired on observations of everyday moments. As a hunter or seeker of color he experiments with colors that vibrate with life. "If I see a photograph or if I watch a movie and I see a color that I like, from that color, I start a new set of paintings," said Sebastian Spreng in an exclusive 2011 WUM interview. "The meaning of my art is a bridge to entice contemplation." In 2009 his work Daphne was selected for the book “Speak for the Trees” along 70 other artists including David Hockney, Christo, April Gornik, Yoko Ono, Julie Heffernan, Robert Longo, Mark Ryden, the Starn Brothers...

Abstract Expressionist Landscape Jay Milder Rhino Horn Painting American Pop Art
By Jay Milder
Located in Surfside, FL
This came from the collection of the Horace Richter Gallery, Old jaffa, Israel These were done in the 1990's This does not appear to be hand signed. It is signed and dated verso perhaps by gallerist. Jay Milder (born 1934) is an American artist and a figurative expressionist painter of the second generation New York School. Old Testament themes such as Jacob's Ladder and Noah’s Ark, and the Jewish mystical beliefs of the Kabbalah, are recurring themes in Milder’s paintings which are presented as archetypal images that recur in the basic karma, make-up and need of human nature. Internationally exhibited, Milder is included in the collections of many national and international museums. He has been the subject of two, recent retrospectives in Brazil in 2007 at the National Museum Brasilia and, in 2006, at the Museum of Modern Art, in Rio de Janeiro. He is renowned in Sao Paulo, one of the major international centers for street and public art, as a seminal influence on graffiti artists. Jay Milder was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1934. His grandparents, who came from the Ukraine, were descendants of the Hasidic mystic, Rabbi Nachman. As he listened to family stories his interest in spiritualism and mysticism increased, and became an important influence on his philosophy of life and art. Later, when he arrived in New York, he was drawn to the Theosophical Society and the teaching of Helena Blavatsky. In 1954 Milder visited Europe where he studied painting with André L’Hote, and sculpture with Ossip Zadkine. He spent much time studying at the Louvre Museum, and at the studio of Stanley Hayter. During his Paris years the paintings of the Jewish painter Chaim Soutine, primarily influenced him. Milder returned to the United States in 1956, and he began studying painting at the Chicago Art Institute. He exhibited with the Momentum Group, an alliance of artists who were particularly dedicated to the progression of figurative art and its global origins. In 1957, Milder spent the summer in Mexico for a summer where he exhibited in Puebla. That year he received the Mexican Government’s Honor Award for artists. In the summer of 1958, Milder studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He exhibited his work at the Sun Gallery, with his contemporaries, including Mary Frank, Red Grooms, Bob Thompson...

Surrealist Painting, Birds of Prey with Fish J. James Akston
Located in Surfside, FL
J. James Akston Surrealism, Bird with Fish, marine scene Acrylic on Board Frame: 9.75 X 8 Image: 4.5 X 3.25 Joseph James Akston was a Polish American sculptor, painter, known for surrealist abstract painting and Aubusson (for Les Ateliers Pinton Frères, tapisserie, Aubusson) tapestry artist. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1898 he died in Palm Beach Florida in 1983. During the 1960s and '70s the entrepreneur-artist James Joseph Akston adopted a unique Surreal Expressionist style in order to present his private primordial universe and lampoon its denizens, a ribald cast of animal creatures with human foibles. A successful industrialist, he began his career with General Motors foreign operations and then started his own business. Intermittently he studied painting, first with Jerry Farnsworth in North Truro (Mass.) and then with Jose Clemente Orozco in Mexico. In the early 1960s Akston became publisher-editor of a group of art publications which included The Magazine Arts. Initially an abstract expressionist, Akston had one-man exhibitions at the New York Convention Center and the Corcoran Museum in Washington. Since 2015 the record price for this artist at auction is $12,575 USD for Spheres Aux Triangles Aubusson Tapestry, sold at Bonhams New York in 2019. He was a Graduate of Georgetown University. Chilean Liquid Abstraction Color Swirl Acrylic Polymer Eduardo Guelfenbein
Located in Surfside, FL
Eduardo Guelfenbein (Chilean, 1953- ) is a Latin American painter who was born in Santiago, Chile, educated in England and Italy, who has lived in Paris, France, since 2003. He started out as a figurative painter and was led to abstraction in late 2000. His soulful liquid abstractions and thick acrylic textured canvases, accompanied by a full color palette, reveal a process of discovery of infinite patterns and forms that much resemble a cosmic creation. His patterns may at first seem accidental, but in fact, meticulous color strokes over layers of varnish, deliver a luminescent visual panorama. His works are busting fluid lines and swirls, depicting patterns that seem to be infinite and create a sense of continuous movement. They bear an affinity to the works of American pop art artist Kenny Scharf. Eduardo Gulfenbein was born in Santiago, Chile, to parents of Russian and Polish origin. He attended Embley Park School, Hampshire, UK (1965–1969) and King's School, Rochester, Kent, UK (1969–1971). In 1971 he realized the backdrops for Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Rochester Cathedral's first musical presentation. 1965/69 - Embley Park School Hampshire Great Britain, 1969/71 - Kings School Rochester Kent Great Britain, In 1973–1977 he studied fine arts at the Accademia di Belle Arti Brera, Milan, Italy, graduating with the Diploma di Licenza Accademia in 1977. In 1978, he moved to Sydney, Australia. In 1985, he returned to Europe, settling between Milan and Paris where he resides as of 2016. His vibrant colorful work has appeared in exhibitions internationally, including a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Santiago in 1997. He has participated in the Atlantic Center for the Arts Artists-in-Residence Program. In the fall of 2012, he participated in the group show Caribe Now, at the Nathan Cumming Foundation, which was organized by El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY. Contemporary Pattern and Decoration piece, The original movement was championed by the gallery owner Holly Solomon. The P&D movement wanted to revive an interest in minor forms such as patterning which at that point was equated with triviality. The prevailing negative view of decoration was one not generally shared by non-Western cultures, The Pattern and Decoration movement was influenced by sources outside of what was considered to be fine art. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Miriam Schapiro, Robert Zakanitch were early proponents of this style. The artist lives and works in New York City. Untitled Abstract Acrylic Painting from Cartoon Series
By Robert Reitzfeld
Located in Surfside, FL
"New York artist Robert Reitzfeld has a devoted cult following, but his paintings are not nearly as well known as they ought to be....The paintings show a witty merger of Pop art idioms and post-painterly abstraction, like a mutant blend of John Wesley, Michael Bevilacqua and Gerhard Richter. In each of the exuberant compositions, Reitzfeld offers a unique balance of formalist elements and absurdist drama." from David Ebony's Top Ten @ Artnet At first, Robert Reitzfeld's distinctive melange of Ab Ex. Pop, Op and other postwar painting styles appears to be a send-up of the source material. Among the 25 recent paintings and works on paper in this show, a number of pieces, including Minnie Mouse, Olive. Che. Marilyn and others, feature cartoons and familiar Pop-art iconography, Reitzfeld's versions often appropriating passages from Warhol and Lichtenstein. But Reitzfeld's images are very often fragmented, with roughly torn edges in the paper pieces and colorful abstract passages of paint in the canvases obscuring and sometimes rearly obliterating the subjects. Rather than a nihilistic gesture, however, his distortions may be viewed as a kind of archeology of recent art. They also reveal a rather personal relationship with specific works that have inspired the veteran New York artist over the years. 1961, I Was There (2007), for instance, Is a painting featuring Donald Duck in his blue-and-white sailor suit—a fragment of Lichtenstein's 1961 painting Look, Mickey!, partly painted over with layered patches of red and pink acrylic as well as a sprinkling of glitter. The title of Reitzfeld's piece alludes to his attendance at a 1961 opening at New York's Sidney Janis Gallery, where Lichtenstein showed this seminal Pop work. Reitzfeld is at his best here in several relatively large (about 36 inches square) intricate hard-edge compositions, such as TBT 56 (Marriage), 2006, and T8T 63 (2007). The latter contains another Lichtenstein reference: a detail of the Whitney Museum's 1973 Still Life with Crystal Bowl set...

Her mother was a Ukrainian immigrant from a musical family, who became an English teacher; her father, a surgeon. Recognizing their daughter’s artistic talents early, they enrolled her at age six in the Little Red Schoolhouse on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Founded in 1921 by Elisabeth Irwin, a pioneer in educational reform, the school has continued to maintain its reputation as a progressive and nurturing catalyst for creative children. Pete Seeger, the folk singer, performed there so frequently that Thorne remembered him as if he were one of the teachers. In 1971, Thorne met Faith Ringgold (b. 1930) and joined her as a teacher at the Women’s House of Detention on Rikers Island in a new program called “Art without Walls–Free Space.” The program, which had been born from the civil rights movement, was aimed at enriching the lives of the inmates. Thorne and her peers came of age struggling against sexism in the art establishment and its attendant lack of exhibition opportunities for women. Since 1985, this issue had been loudly exposed by the public protests of the Guerrilla Girls, whose members remain a well-kept secret. Her painting has been included in two Whitney Museum Biennials and various other museum group exhibitions both in the United States, Europe and Latin America. She has had numerous one person shows in galleries such as: Sideshow Gallery New York, Fischbach Gallery, New York City, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Willard Gallery, New York, Graham & Sons Gallery, New York, The Clocktower, New York City, and the National Arts Club among others. Thorne has been awarded the Prix de Rome Fellowship to paint at the American Academy in Rome. She also received two National Endowment grants for painting and two Pollock Krasner Grants among others. "Since 1973, while myriad styles, movements and mediums have flourished briefly in turn, Joan Thorne has steadfastly developed one visual language-that of painterly surface, light, color and distilled form-which she finds best suited for her artistic project: intimating dreams. intuitions and the psychic consequences of travel. " "For there is something luxuriant and mysterious in Thorne's compositions. They have a classic modernist genealogy that encompasses Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Milton Avery and Mark Tobey; yet each carries a hint of exoticism, " --Richard Vine, Art In America, Review, June 1998 Education Hunter College, New York, M.A. New York University, New York, B.S. Today, he makes fetishistic notebooks filled with colored paper and scribbled equations, accretions of feathers and Rhoplex." "Marty Greenbaum and Barton Lidice Benes destroy texts to create sculpture: Benes 'Bound Book,' a literal rope and wax imprisonment, and Greenbaum's 'Cutting Up,' a mixed media paste over of muted colors." Some of his most notable artist books include: "Batman" 1963-67, "In '84 Returned in 2004". Two stories about Marty from James Pernotto: we met at William Weege print shop in 1974 when he drove out from NYC with Alan Shields and Paco Grande and I was a lithography printer hired to work with them. Alan recalled on the trip out that Marty was working on his altered books and putting airplane glue on the pages and lighting it with a match. Enough said. I printed for Marty. Canadian Modernist Abstract Expressionist Painting Color Field Claude Vermette
By Claude Vermette
Located in Surfside, FL
Claude Vermette R.C.A. is a Canadian ceramicist and painter who was born in Montreal, Quebec, August 10, 1930 and who died in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, April 21, 2006. Artist of international reputation, he made important contributions to the ceramic arts in Canada As a ceramist who worked in the architecture field, Claude Vermette is a pioneer in Québec and in Canada with regards to this type of artistic expression. The bursts of colours of his wall size mural ceramics, the warmth of their hues and the play of their textures brought a human dimension in architectural spaces that were often grey and frigid. In his abstract paintings as well as in his prints and watercolours, Claude Vermette pursued this bold approach while constantly renewing and expanding the possibilities of colour and light. His work works with gradations of color field and shifting light. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Claude Vermette studied art under the guidance of Brother Jerome, c.s.c. at Notre-Dame College while also attending the Collège Saint-Laurent and the college of the Clercs de Saint-Viateur for his academic studies. Through his contact with Brother Jerome, he met Paul-Emile Borduas and joined the Automatiste group of emerging artists. They were influenced by Surrealism and its theory of automatism. Members included Marcel Barbeau, Roger Fauteux, Claude Gauvreau, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Pierre Gauvreau, Fernand Leduc, Jean-Paul Mousseau, Marcelle Ferron and Françoise Sullivan...
